Summary

A Wall Street Journal bestseller.

The third book in the million-copy bestselling Kingfountain series from Jeff Wheeler.

Against all odds, Owen Kiskaddon grew from frightened boy to confident youth to trusted officer in the court of Kingfountain - and watched its regent, Severn Argentine, grow ever more ruthless and power-mad. Robbed of his beloved protector, his noble mentor, and his true love, Owen has anticipated the day when the king he fears and reviles, yet loyally serves, will be toppled. Now, as Severn plots a campaign of conquest, the time has come to take action...and Owen’s destiny demands that he lead the strike.

Ordered to incite war with a neighboring kingdom, Owen discovers its beautiful, reclusive ruler, whose powerful magic might even exceed his own. Together they mount a daring plot to overthrow the corrupt monarch, crown the rightful heir, and defeat the prophesied curse threatening Kingfountain with wintry death. But Severn’s evil is as bottomless as the fabled Deep Fathoms. To keep his ill-gotten throne, he’ll gladly spill the blood of enemies and innocents alike.

loved it! great story to lose yourself in!

kate Rudd reads the series well. love the fact it has lots of references to places across the uk and our historical legends. Jeff Wheeler is a great writer all the fantasy, love, war and legend in a whole series!

Compelling

Once again we jump forward some 6 years. Whereas Owen Kiskaddon (now 24) has grown from a frightened boy into the confident Duke of Westmarch, King Severn has become a tyrant who will do anything to hang on to his power; yet Owen still serves him, so far.

King Severn wishes to marry Kathryn, but cannot do so until he can find a way of disposing of her husband, Eyric.

Lady Elysabeth Victoria Mortimer has married Iago, King of Atabyrion, has two children and has grown to love him, while keeping her friendship with Owen.

Owen finally meets Queen Sinia of Brythonica and is taken aback by her generosity. He is unaware that she has known about him since he was a child and has secretly helped him over the years. She is also very much in love with Owen. Could he finally get over his love for Elysabeth?

We learn what influence the Wizr set will have on events and the prophecy of the Dreadful Deadman will finally be realised.

Never boring for a moment!

Great 3rd book in this series. It is a teenage/young adults book but loved it all the same. Can't wait to hear the 4th in the series!

Good series poorly read

I was driven potty listening to the poor pronunciation of some of the place names. I live in the UK many of the place names are actual places in the UK so I know how things should be pronounced......
Also find narrators style difficult as she tends to put to much emphasis on words such and and, the, have etc which for me means the narration is slow and does not flow as it would if you were reading the text.
I stuck with the series as I enjoyed the story and plot. Will not chose books performed by this narrator in future

Best book of the series

I loved the story this time around. 5 stars because it was exciting, thrilling and unexpectedly funny in some places too. I think this is my favourite of the series so far!
