About this listen

One of the most famous victims of the Holy Office of the Inquisition was the brilliant Dominican monk Giordano Bruno, burnt at the stake for heresy in 1600.

Morris West recreates a diary of Bruno’s intimate thoughts as he languishes in Rome’s worst prison for seven years. Bruno’s reflections and frank memories of his life reveal him to be both a fine thinker and a flawed priest – and a man willing to pay the highest price to be true to himself.

The Last Confession was West’s final novel, published posthumously. Composed with passion and compassion, this is a voice that mesmerises from the start.

Superb performance

A moving if somewhat harrowing account of Giordano Bruno's last weeks as a prisoner of the Roman Inquisition, superbly narrated throughout.

Wonderful, wonderful story, but a tad 'over-acted'

I can't say I'm familiar with Morris West, but I've read a few of his early books, thought this might be worth a look, and bought it without the slightest clue what it would be about.

it turns out to be historical fiction - a conjectural reconstruction of the last thoughts of Giordanno Brunno in prison, before being burned by the inquisition.

It's excellent - I would give the story more than 5 stars if I could. My only quibble was with the narration. It was VASTLY better than some of the deadpan readers I've encountered on Audible (some of which actually made me wonder if I was listening to a computerised text-reader) But...

This was just a touch too far in the other direction. A rich, plumy, 'I am AN ACTOOOR!' sort of voice booming out, which actually kept knocking me out of the story.

Nevertheless, IMO, worth buying anyway. I loved it.
