Summary

In 1970, one of Mississippi’s more colorful weekly newspapers, The Ford County Times, went bankrupt. To the surprise and dismay of many, ownership was assumed by a 23 year-old college dropout, named Willie Traynor. The future of the paper looked grim, until a young mother was brutally raped and murdered by a member of the notorious Padgitt family.

Willie Traynor reported all the gruesome details, and his newspaper began to prosper. The murderer, Danny Padgitt, was tried before a packed courthouse in Clanton, Mississippi. The trial came to a startling and dramatic end when the defendant threatened revenge against the jurors if they convicted him. Nevertheless, they found him guilty, and he was sentenced to life in prison.

But in Mississippi in 1970, "life" didn’t necessarily mean "life", and nine years later Danny Padgitt managed to get himself paroled. He returned to Ford County, and the retribution began.

Critic reviews

"Wholly engrossing - Grisham's story-telling knack has not deserted him; and the hint that something more serious is at stake than the solution of a crime gives the narrative an extra depth" ( Evening Standard)

not worth it

very poor attempt. more about how to run a newspaper than the typical political or legal thriller we are used to from the author. feel very let down.

Very enjoyable

Grisham does either write superb stories that really draw one in, or stories that are totally boring. Thankfully this was one of the former sort.
I really enjoyed the story, it also helps to like the characters, which I did. This was an interesting tale that showed the intolerance towards Black people at the time when segregation was being overturned, albeit with plenty of animosity, but there was so much more to it than that. An interesting story of a young man making something of himself when he takes over the small town newspaper, and the friendship that he forged with a lovely Black lady. This has left me thinking long after I have finished the book.

I was taken in by the twist at the end.

Personally, I feel Grisham has written better.

I have read a number of Grisham novels, and, although this one doesn’t meet the standards of some, it did keep my interest and in my opinion, Michael Beck was superb in his narration as usual.

Never fails

It’s been a while since I read or listened to a John Grisham book but I instantly remembered just how compelling and captivating his writing is. The narration is perfect, the issues of racial integration in the South are dealt with sensitively and with insight. Loved this book

Absorbing and entrancing

Welcome to small town, Deep South USA just as the modern world arrives. An excellent set of stories from the master. I didn’t want it to end.
