Summary

"If men no longer know what they are looking at, there may well be unicorns in the world yet, unknown and glad of it."

Living in peace in her lilac wood, the Unicorn didn't know the world had changed, or that anything had happened to the rest of her kind. Overhearing a chance conversation, she resolves to venture out and discover the truth. The road is dangerous, and the risks are great. If she fails, then unicorns will be lost. Forever.

A modern fairy tale, The Last Unicorn is a beloved classic, voted by TIME as one of the 100 greatest fantasy novels of all time. It is fantastical, poignant, wistful and wonderous, showing us the humanity of magic, and the magic of humanity.

Available in the UK for the first time in decades, this edition features an introduction by Patrick Rothfuss.

overrated

It was a pleasant story but I don't get the hype. A very normal fairy tale.

Just wonderful

I think Patrick sums the book up perfectly in the introduction. If you haven’t read it read it, if you have read it read it again, if someone asks you about the book tell them to read it.

Beautifully written, wonderfully narrated, one of the greatest books of any genre.

You will not be disappointed, buy it read it, listen to it it’s wonderful.

prefer the film

I grew up watching the film, over and over again till the video burnt out. Naturally had to have it on dvd and then amazon.
Now I couldn't believe myself that hadn't read the book, so I listened to it instead (coz who has time to read). I was so excited, I couldn't pin my ears hard enough, close my eyes and see my beloved characters tell more of their story.
Like so many adaptations so much is left out, parts of the story that makes it so much richer. So to say I was disappointed with this original story is heartbreaking. It felt messy and the extra information was unnecessary. Perhaps this is a biased opinion. I will try to find another narrator that better tells the story that so many have cherished.

The ending took an age to arrive.

The Victorians adored writing complex & intricate descriptions that required a good night's sleep to tackle & much concentration to endure. The verbal bombardment of cleverly written sentences in this book was an ordeal, but worthwhile for the occasional magnificent gem. I need a good lay down, now. It was like running a marathon on my tiptoes.
