About this listen

From a best-selling, award-winning Swedish author, The Living and the Dead in Winsford is a gripping and deeply atmospheric psychological thriller set on Exmoor.

There is nobody in the world who knows that we are here....

A woman arrives in the village of Winsford on Exmoor. She has travelled a long way and chosen her secluded cottage carefully. Maria's sole intention is to outlive her beloved dog, Castor. And to survive the torrent of memories that threaten to overwhelm her.

Weeks before, Maria and her husband, Martin, fled Stockholm under a cloud. The couple were bound for Morocco, where Martin planned to write an explosive novel - one that would reveal the truth behind dark events within his commune of writers decades before. But the couple never made it to their destination.

As Maria settles in to her lonely new life, walking the wild, desolate moors, it becomes clear that Winsford isn't quite the sanctuary she thought it would be. While the long, dark evenings close in and the weather worsens, strange things begin to happen around her. But what terrible secrets is Maria guarding? And who is trying to find her?

A haunting, masterly unravelling of a dreadful crime, in The Living and the Dead in Winsford, Håkan Nesser, the best-selling, award-winning author of the Van Veeteren series, tightens the tension like a noose....

Loved this - stylish and clever with an incredible climax

This is so beautifully written and narrated. The story unfolds at a perfect pace to keep suspense going. While the odd point is slightly unbelievable, this really is a very small point for hat was an incredibly enjoyable book.

Great “ time- thief “ - put most activities off!

A gripping story brilliantly delivered by Jennifer Vuletic .
Jennifer brought to life each character with her ability to switch accents and voices. A rare treat!

Very disappointing.

Given the synopsis and the excellent reviews for 'The Living and the Dead in Winsford', I was really looking forward to listening to this story, especially as I am a fan of Scandanavian thrillers. Since I live in North Devon, it was nice to hear local place names but do we really need a local weather report for every day of Maria's stay?! The synopsis says that the novel is 'gripping and atmospheric' and clearly, some listeners agree. I just found it tedious and kept checking my iPod to find out how near to the end I was. I usually listen to books at every opportunity but it took me quite a while to get through this one because I was enduring it, rather than enjoying it. You are probably wondering why I didn't give up and return the book. I persevered because of the synopsis and reviews, which led me to hope that there would be some killer twists at some point. On the positive side, the prose is very well written and the narrator does a good job. I won't be listening to anything else by this author. If you want to give Scandanavian thrillers a go, I highly recommend 'The Killing' trilogy by David Hewson or 'The Game' trilogy by Anders de la Motte.

Interesting & relevant bits makes about 6 pages

This story is long, boring and most of the story is irrelevant. I kept waiting for it to become a crime thriller!

The most boring book I have ever listened to

If this book wasn’t for you, who do you think might enjoy it more?

Can not imagine as there is a good review for it, which completely surprised me. For me there is absolutely nothing to recommend it and the ending may be different according to the review but I am sorry to say that I could not have cared less having listened to hours of boring triviality, so never got that far.

What will your next listen be?

Have not decided next but it is not likely to be by the same author

How could the performance have been better?

I found the voice monotonous and monotone.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Boredom

Any additional comments?

No, having said all I can go look for an entertaining book
