About this listen

Star Watch defeated the Swarm Invasion Fleet, but at a terrible cost in destroyed star systems, smashed battleships and billions of dead. In the aftermath of the costly victory, chaos threatens as worlds leave the Commonwealth of Planets, face mass starvation or succumb to increased piracy. The war against the Swarm Imperium has just begun. Humanity needs unity or each planet will fall alone. Brigadier O'Hara of Star Watch Intelligence stumbles onto a secret conspiracy. Someone is trying to destroy the Commonwealth from within, and they have an alien artifact of incredible power. O'Hara summons Captain Maddox. Although she fears to lose him, she knows that Maddox and his crew have the best chance of finding the hidden enemy. If the captain fails, the Commonwealth will be powerless to stop its destruction. What O'Hara doesn't know--it would probably break her heart if she did--is that she has just sent Maddox into the most harrowing battle of his career. THE LOST ARTIFACT is the eighth book in the LOST STARSHIP SERIES.

A Deepening Narrative with Intriguing Twists

In "The Lost Artifact," the eighth book of the Lost Starship series by Vaughn Heppner and narrated by Mark Boyett, I found myself immersed in a tale of aftermath and resilience. The aftermath of the Swarm Invasion Fleet's defeat paints a grim picture - shattered star systems, devastated battleships, and the unbearable loss of billions of lives. As chaos looms over the Commonwealth of Planets, threatened by division, famine, and piracy, the war against the implacable Swarm Imperium is far from over; in fact, it's just beginning.

Amidst this backdrop of turmoil, Brigadier O'Hara of Star Watch Intelligence stumbles upon a covert conspiracy that has the potential to unravel the very foundations of the Commonwealth from within. The stakes are staggering, as the conspirators wield an enigmatic alien artifact of immense power. Recognizing the gravity of the situation, O'Hara calls upon Captain Maddox and his steadfast crew. The weight of the risks they face weighs heavy, but their unique capabilities make them the best hope in unveiling the hidden enemy. The consequences of their success or failure are monumental, determining whether the Commonwealth stands strong or succumbs to obliteration.

The evolving depth of character development becomes evident in this installment, a testament to the series' growth and commitment to enriching the narrative. Focusing on the core ship and its inhabitants adds layers of connection, anchoring me in the heart of the story.

The narrative also leads to two distinct endings, each carrying its own sense of closure. One ending offers a more introspective exploration, while the second brings a swifter conclusion. Despite the variations, the overall quality of the book remains consistent, leaving me eager to see what the next phase of the series will bring.

In conclusion, "The Lost Artifact" draws me deeper into the narrative, unfolding layers of intrigue, unity, and impending crisis. The Lost Starship series continues to evolve with each installment, offering a more immersive and captivating experience. As the series advances, I'm left eagerly anticipating the forthcoming chapters, curious to witness the paths the characters will tread and the destiny that awaits the Commonwealth.

No Shortage of Action

A little slow to start, but once it got going all hell seemed to break loose and it was rollercoaster all the way.

Love this series, but perhaps the next book could be a little quicker coming, please.

Non stop interest, not deep but good

More of the same, but with more character development, so getting better still.
The concentration on the core ship and characters worked well. Almost two endings, wanted more of the first, than the more rushed second and final one. All good though looking forward to more.

Lost steam for this series

I really liked this series of books, until this one. Mark Boyett's voice work is as good as ever, but the story was lacking for me with this one. I didn't finish due to it being hard to keep interested for long, as it dragged on so slowly with meandering multiple main plot lines looping around each other, as opposed to the previous books that had more of a single main story with small side plots.
