Summary

A page-turning OMG love story, The Love of My Life is a bold, mysterious romance from Rosie Walsh, author of The Man Who Didn't Call.

I have held you every night for ten years and I didn’t even know your name. We have a child together. A dog, a house.

Who are you?

Emma loves her husband Leo and their young daughter Ruby: she’d do anything for them. But almost everything she's told them about herself is a lie.

And she might just have got away with it, if it weren’t for her husband’s job. Leo is an obituary writer and Emma is a well-known marine biologist. So, when she suffers a serious illness, Leo copes by doing what he knows best: reading and writing about her life.

But as he starts to unravel her past, he discovers the woman he loves doesn’t really exist. Even her name is made-up.

When the very darkest moments of Emma’s past life finally emerge, she must somehow prove to Leo that she really is the woman he always thought she was. But first, she must tell him about the love of her other life . . .

Critic reviews

[A] compelling, painful romance, with the page-turning plot of a psychological thriller . . . Stunning (Daily Mail)
The Love of My Life is a dazzling supernova of a book, which picks you up on line one and doesn't let you go until the very end. Each chapter is filled with heart-breaking twists and revelations, and it's brimming with human warmth and intelligence (Lisa Jewell, author of The Night She Disappeared)
Fabulous! Unexpected, gripping and surprisingly heart wrenching. I couldn’t put it down (Jane Fallon, author of Just Got Real)

The second time listening enjoyed it just as much

This book with its brilliant story line told by actors with such soothing voices. I can’t recommend it enough

Good narration

I felt it was a bit flat at the beginning and hard to get into but as the story has a lovely ending.

Good story, struggled with narrators

Good if slightly predictable story but did find the female narrator particularly irritating at times which sadly did take some enjoyment away. Overall I would recommend however.

Enjoyable

I quite enjoyed this although it felt like it dragged out a bit at the end. The story was an interesting one but the characters seemed a bit wet to me and it was hard to empathise, even though I felt I should. Some twists were a bit unbelievable. I did struggle with the narrators as both seemed to have a very odd way of overemphasising words and phrases and Ms Church uses a sing song voice which felt like a children's presenter to me. I fully appreciate that she is recognised to be a great narrator, though, so it's probably just me. I came to this book after listening to Alan Cumming narrating the Second Cut and he is absolutely masterful, as indeed is the book, so maybe it's not a fair comparison. Overall, would recommend.

Great story line

Absolutely loved this story, lots of unexpected twists and turns, sorry to say that the narration by the woman was slow and over deliberate so I speeded it up to 1.2 which improved it!

A heart wrenching rollercoaster!

I thoroughly enjoyed this, I was jumping to so many conclusions it was dizzying! Even when I was close to guessing something, two other plot lines bit me on the bottom to stop me from feeling complacent.

There are some emotive subjects covered in this book, and while part of me thinks it might benefit from some trigger warnings, I can’t imagine how you’d do that without revealing too much too soon.

I was near tears with empathy for multiple characters, and I almost wanted to listen to it again before I’d finished!

Thus would make a gripping film, or tv series.

Emotional but simple

Nothing too much complicated but and story interesting enough for you to keep going.
I had found myself with my car parked on the driveway but still staying a few more minutes to finish the chapter or find something more.
