THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER
A Times and Sunday Times Book of the Year

Updated with a new afterword by the author

'Douglas Murray fights the good fight for freedom of speech ... A truthful look at today's most divisive issues' – Jordan B. Peterson

'[Murray’s] latest book is beyond brilliant and should be read, must be read, by everyone' – Richard Dawkins

Are we living through the great derangement of our times?

In The Madness of Crowds Douglas Murray investigates the dangers of ‘woke’ culture and the rise of identity politics. In lively, razor-sharp prose he examines the most controversial issues of our moment: sexuality, gender, technology and race, with interludes on the Marxist foundations of ‘wokeness’, the impact of tech and how, in an increasingly online culture, we must relearn the ability to forgive.

One of the few writers who dares to counter the prevailing view and question the dramatic changes in our society – from gender reassignment for children to the impact of transgender rights on women – Murray’s penetrating book, now published with a new afterword taking account of the book's reception and responding to the worldwide Black Lives Matter protests, clears a path of sanity through the fog of our modern predicament.

Contemporary wisdom for the wary and the weary

It you ever find yourself scratching your head at the seemingly ludicrous ideas emerging from the progressive, "woke" left and are often exasperated by otherwise intelligent people spewing utterly vacuous, ideological drivel then this is the book for you.

A brilliant indictment of an incoherent ideology

Murray documents the West's own version of the Maoist cultural revolution in sobering detail, it's incoherence, it's inconsistencies and most worryingly of all the extent that it has infected the wider society. The West is dying, this book identifies the poisoner.

Essential reading for my fellow oppressors

As a member of the oppressor class, according to the oppression hierarchy, I’ve tried to become more woke as an act of supplication to all the people I’ve been oppressing. But I find myself being outwoked all the time. Douglas Murray has very readably given me hope that wokeness will eat itself and spit me out undigested. Thank you Douglas

Everyone should listen

The rise of social media has seriously changed the social and political landscape. Careers are shattered in seconds, the young are locked in echo chambers of fear and anger, and reasonable people of neither extreme are lost amid the noise and hysteria. Douglas Murray steps forward, puts his foot on the ball and offers a sensible calming voice amongst the nonsense. He perfectly articulates what we all sense to be true but for whatever reason are unable to say. I hope everyone listens to this, and I hope the tide turns against the hysteria. genuinely the best book I have listened to on audible.

an important book

A well structured explanation of the modern day arguments we are confronted by on a daily basis. if you've been frustrated by the terms 'mansplaining' 'toxic masculinity' 'Snowflake' and the like read on. Murray calmly cuts through the evolution of such terms, the reasoning behind their appearance and the causes of mob madness we see so often these days.

Best counter culture read of 2019

Murray leads the charge against the establishment insanity with this pile driver of a book. From the key obsessed topics of the age: race and trans, he systrmatically unpacks the liberal lunacy. The trans issue is the most disturbing of all. In the space of a few years it has raced from a fringe mental health issue to a casual lifestyle choice to either remove or add appendages, block puberty and mutilate human beings all in the name of tolerance.
This insanity must be challenged. This book delivers the nuclear warhead straight to the heart of the enemy.

Dissection of the unexplainable

Unmissable account of the modern political landscape, deliberately focussing on and debunking the thorniest of issues. Absolutely fantastic.

The best account of the Twitter rage mob to date.

it dissects modern race, gender, gay and trans rights movements by revealing their flaws.
