About this listen
When treating a patient at the residence of the local magician, Lord Dakon, Tessia is forced to fight off the advances of a visiting Sachakan mage - and instinctively uses magic. She now finds herself facing an entirely different future as Lord Dakon's apprentice.
But along with the excitement and privilege, Tessia is about to discover that her magical gifts bring with them a great deal of responsibility. Events are brewing that will lead nations into war, rival magicians into conflict, and spark an act of sorcery so brutal that its effects will be felt for centuries.

Love the book, audio version different?
I have read this book probably about 25 times (so know it inside out) and this reading misses out significant sections of the book. A real shame because the book is wonderful.

Good story, shame about the glitches
Yet again Trudi Canavan immerses us in the beautifully detailed world first encountered in the Magician's trilogy. This book is well read, and the characters and place names become familiar to us. Unfortunately the recording suffers from glitches, meaning there are longer than usual pauses in odd places. These are not sufficient to really spoil the telling of the story, but do somewhat break the spell.

Narration was great
The book is quite dull, you can’t get too attached to the characters. It’s interesting to see the life of two women - on the good and the bad side - displayed in parallel and their efforts to learn in a society where they’re only useful for marriage. It’s a simple, rather uninteresting book otherwise

Good, but too many events whiz by
Great story, but far too much squeezed in. It should've been a much longer book.

And easy listen
If you want a short easy listen this one isn’t bad. There is some magic but it’s not explained well, more like it’s a new thing people are figuring out. I have read The Black Magician Trilogy and I have the same issue with this book as that series, the author doesn’t know how to properly end a series and her go to method is one of shock value. But as she does this all the time I have to assume she just isn’t a good write and her only trick is this really random way she ends things. People seem to not mind it, but it’s annoying. And I never have a satisfied feeling after reading her books, so she is unlikely to get a higher rating from me nor be a favourite.

Don't bother
I was looking forward to this book, I really enjoyed the previous trilogy. However the story is quite 1 dimensional, you don't get to know the characters in any depth and it feels like the story was put together with any great thought. Added to this the audio version is poorly read and edited- e.g. Jumping from one strand to another without any pauses.
I wish I had not spent a credit on this book.
