About this listen

It is 1933, and a dead man has been found lying under railway arches in Berlin. An old soldier, hideously disfigured, he has been killed mysteriously.

Gereon Rath is brought onto the case while his fiancée, Charlotte Ritter, blazes her own trail. Meanwhile, the Nazis consolidate their hold on power, the Reichstag is burned down and things become a lot worse not only for Berlin’s Jewish community but also for those police officers who can remain in action.

The shadow of the Nazis looms larger

Brilliant blend of detective novel and history, the characters seem like the proverbial frog in the saucepan the heat is rising but most don't know they are being cooked alive in the heat of 'The New Germany'.

Something lost in translation.

Overall an enjoyable story but something was lost in translation.

It wasn't as clear as the first three books in this series.

However Mark Meadows narrative makes up for the loss. A very interesting story and performance.

Look forward to the next book.

Back on form

I found the last book in this series a bit lacklustre but Kutscher is back in cracking form with this one. There’s a net full red herrings for the anti-hero to get past but never does it get silly. Plus I’ve learned more German history from these books than ever in school.

Started well, got worse as the story progressed

First part of the book I found interesting and enjoyable, as it progressed it just went on and on rather boringly.
