Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

From the Costa-Winning, Women's Prize-shortlisted author of Unsettled Ground: a gripping, haunting novel about memory, love and survival, for fans of Never Let me Go and Leave the World Behind.

Neffy is a young woman running away from grief and guilt and the one big mistake that has derailed her career. When she answers the call to volunteer in a controlled vaccine trial, it offers her a way to pay off her many debts and, perhaps, to make up for the past.

But when the London streets below her window fall silent, and all external communications cease, only Neffy and four other volunteers remain in the unit. With food running out, and a growing sense that the strangers she is with may be holding back secrets, Neffy has questions that no-one can answer. Does safety lie inside or beyond the unit? And who, or what is out there?

While she weighs up her choices, she is introduced to a pioneering and controversial technology which allows her to revisit memories from her life before: a childhood divided between her enigmatic mother and her father in his small hotel in Greece. Intoxicated by the freedom of the past and the chance to reunite with those she loves, she increasingly turns away from her perilous present. But in this new world where survival rests on the bonds between strangers, is she jeopardising any chance of a future?

The Memory of Animals is a taut and emotionally charged novel about freedom and captivity, survival and sacrifice and whether you can save anyone before you save yourself.

Not just a pandemic novel

I have read all Claire’s books and enjoy her themes around isolated characters. This one is also linked to the pandemic but was started before the event which is remarkably prescient of the author. It’s quite bleak as expected from a dystopian novel with elements of hope. The narrator is good and has a range of voices. I have enjoyed her reading of other authors.

Lots of unanswered questions

I enjoyed the story line and the journey which the main character undergoes but felt that the book lacks more detail in the bigger picture of what has occurred.

The book describes in detail Neffy's experiences and explores some interesting themes which I enjoyed but I was left with many more unanswered questions than I would have liked and this irritated me slightly.

It was an interesting dystopian novel but I was a little disappointed overall.

Vivid, thought provoking and absorbing

A pandemic, a vaccine trial and marine biologist who has an affinity with octopuses reflecting on what it is to be human and humane. Ethical questions run through this book which explores, through two main timelines, the concept of freedom and the power of memories.
I’ve enjoyed all Claire Fuller’s books and this is no exception. You don’t have to be drawn to dystopian themes to reap rewards from this novel. I loved it and the narration was really good too.

Excellent

Clare Fuller has done it again in this wonderful work of fiction and I loved every minute of this beautifully narrated book. Set through two time lines I was fully invested in the characters and the story and it was a perfect listen. I highly recommend this book.

Great potential; didn't really go anywhere

bit disappointed with this, it had such good potential but the story seemed to stick for 3/4 of the book.

Thoughtful and immersive

A well -narrated novel exploring the spaces we map, attempting to balance our deep need for connection with the necessity of self-protection. A quietly ambitious structure contrasts confinement against an expansive sense of memories relived, beloveds reloved.
Doubtless I've enjoyed this more than any of her previous books.
