Summary

Bloomsbury presents The Midlife Cyclist by Phil Cavell, read by Phil Cavell.

Renowned cycling biomechanics pioneer Phil Cavell explores the growing trend of middle-aged and older cyclists seeking to achieve high-level performance. Using contributions from leading coaches, ex-professionals and pro-team doctors, he produces the ultimate manifesto for mature riders who want to stay healthy, avoid injury - and maximise their achievement levels.

Time's arrow traditionally plots an incremental path into declining strength and speed for all of us. But we are different to every other generation of cyclists in human history. An ever-growing number of us are determined to scale the highest peaks of elite physical fitness into middle-age and beyond. Can the emerging medical and scientific research help us achieve the holy triumvirate of speed and health with age?

The Midlife Cyclist offers a gold standard roadmap for the mature cyclist who aims to train, perform and even race at the highest possible level.

Cracking Listen

I think any cyclist would enjoy this book as the authors love of the sport creates a warm kinship with the listener. The clue is in the name of course and the midlife cyclist will find particular relevance and enjoyment here. The author narrates himself which is not always a blessing but in this case works very well and I thoroughly enjoyed listening to him. Great content nicely narrated. Recommended.

refreshing

The book is written by someone who obviously loves cycling and writing. As a result it can in parts sound similar to a set of essays and thoughts rather than a traditional cycle training guide, as a result it is a very refreshing and informative.

Wise, honest and practical

Phil knows his stuff. His book is a generous sharing of his knowledge and experience. Great too that he doesn't shy away from challenging accepted ideas, ideas that don't have evidence but prevail just because of time. Nice job Phil.

When will I die

As a keen cyclist who had fallen out of training, i started going to the gym and got back on the bike. 3 weeks into my new me, I downloaded this book and have found it as the perfect companion to my return to training in the late 50's. I had just reached the chapter "when will I die". After work I was crossing the road when an out of control elderly driver ran over me from behind. It could have been so much worse but a clear example of how things outside of your influence can change so quickly. Looking forward to a full return to training when I have recovered. Great book.
