About this listen

Fact catches up with fiction when the secret of telepathic communication is discovered. But the device at the centre of the mystery is in the possession of two schoolboys and whether they stole it or invented it, there are powerful interests who will kill to get hold of it.

Albert Campion faces as deadly a challenge as any in his career. As urbane as Lord Wimsey.as ingenious as Poirot. Meet one of crime fiction's Great Detectives, Mr Albert Campion.

Critic reviews

"Margery Allingham stands out like a shining light. Everything she writes has a definite shape...each book has its own separate and distinctive background" ( Agatha Christie)
"Miss Allingham has a strong, well controlled sense of humour, a power of suggesting character with a few touches and an excellent English style. She has a sense of the fantastic, and is never dull" ( Times Literary Supplement)
"The real queen of crime" ( Guardian)

very poor.

I'm usually a great fan of Margery Allingham but I found this story very difficult to follow and completely unbelievable.

Exciting story - twists and turns

Classic MA, quite science fiction in flavour - meets old world UK. Plenty of action and great characterisation by the narrator. Enjoyable to the end.

Not that bad !

this is admittedly one of the more complex Campion plots and with the benefit of several decades of hindsight the technology does seem a bit unlikely , however I don't think it bears the one star reviews slating it , yes it has several groups of characters but they do all come together and need to be there to offer the alternative scenarios without giving the game away the eventual explanation of who is behind the sinister new technology is quite clever .
maybe it's just me but I was able to follow the characters and plot fine and although not one of her best it was perfectly listenable .

The Mind Readers

Very into the future story line, with a great mystery along the way, read brilliantly again by David Thorpe.

Confusing

I never was much good with stories of espionage! I found this difficult to follow and probably proved I'm a bear of little brain

Complex

Highly complex plot as you would expect from this spy/mystery story - but great fun as always.

Book Not Suitable for Audio

This book is just not suitable for an audiobook. So many characters, so many names, so many events to follow. It would be confusing enough with a paperback but probably doable, as I could look back at some sections and take some notes with character names etc. It would probably help to have a character name before each section, but still, mightily confusing. Head-hopping, character soup. It's not author's best work. Still, some books are just compliecated like that, and producers should know better than to record them. I know, market, money, yes. But don't be surprised when one star reviews show up...

The worst Allingham I’ve read

I’m usually a Margery Allingham fan, but if this were the first one I’d read I’d have never looked at her books again. The plot manages to be both convoluted & boring. I disliked most of the characters & couldn’t care less what happened to them. Not recommended!
