Summary

Mindfulness, the quality of attention that combines full awareness with acceptance of each moment, just as it is, is gaining broad acceptance among mental health professionals as an adjunct to treatment. Because at the heart of addiction is the fear of painful emotional states, addicts compulsively seek drugs and alcohol to avoid or escape emotional pain. Mindfulness, on the other hand, helps us develop greater acceptance and ease with life’s challenges, as well as greater self-compassion.

Here, Dr. Lawrence Peltz, who has worked as an addiction psychiatrist for more than two decades, draws from his clinical experience and on the techniques of mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) to explain the fundamental dynamics of addiction and the stages of the recovery process, and also gives us specific mindfulness exercises to support recovery.

Brilliant

A must read for anyone struggling with addictions or even just everyday life. I'm going to start listening to is again straight away. Lawrence Peltz needs his own podcast. There's a lot of people of there that this book could really help

Life changing

This book has been on my list for a while after suffering with numerous addictions yet I’d been putting it off as change is daunting. Completely revolutionised the way I see myself and my addictions. 1000% recommend this book

More than expected

It is very well written. Examples of patients are very interesting and real. I meditate and I have read some books about mindfulness but I learn from this book a lot of new things. For example that thoughts could be also seen as an addiction or that taking drugs helps people cope in short term, so addicts are not crazy, they just don't know how do better. And most important how mindfulness can support recovery - other ways like AA meeting and psychoterapy are also discussed.

A must read

This is one of those books you know you'll return to again. Excellent.
I learned so much about mindfulness and anxiety and how people can self sabotage so easily.
The narration is empathetic, non judgemental, and it's one of the few books where you know it's based on actual real-life scenarios .

A great start in the path to recovery.

This is the first audible book I have listened to upon subscribing.

It has not really changed anything for me in the sense I hoped it would just magically fix my problems… but then I admit, that was always wishful thinking.

I still can say (with hope) that it has/will put me in a better state of mind to continue on my path and bolster what I have learned from this book by now going on to listen to others.

There are many moments in this audio book that do hit home in a good way…
The knowledge that there are others dealing with exactly the same issues.
It also helped me to accept that I am not a monster who has unique problems, and that my problems now feel more a sense of ‘normal’ symptoms that come with depression/anxiety etc…
Now I know I am not alone, and the feelings and thoughts I struggle with are shared, recognised and understood I have real hope that the next audio book will give me a greater empowerment to not give up.
I wish you all good luck, love and hope. Never give up.

A good insight to mindfulness and its power

Doesnt matter if youre an addict or not, you will gain something from this book. If you are an addict to something however this book can be life changing. I found the reader a little boring at first but the more I listened the more I got into it.

Accurate!

Spot on description of addiction and very clear helpful steps for recovery (development).
Highly recommended for anyone who is / has suffered or knows someone who is.
I wish this book had been handed to me earlier.
