good story. well read apart from some voices which I felt didn't really suit the characters tho that's just a personal opinion.

A Great Listen
I enjoyed this so much. Philip Madoc does another great narrating job. The story was faster-paced than The Weirdstone of Brisingamen and more exciting.

a book of real enchantment
Such an extraordinary book. Truly unique. A tale that did in fact change my life as a 12 year old. Such enchantment, that it was real.

Narrator's voice unlistenable
This is an amazing book. I listened to the first in the series and really enjoyed it with the same narrator. However in this story there are lots of additional characters the narrator has to 'voice' with varying pitches/tones. He usually has a deep timbre but the whole story becomes completely unlistenable to... really unpleasant... as there are a couple of character voices that are waaaaay too high pitched and excited. I honestly couldn't stand it. I'm really disappointed as I would like to know how the story ends.

Ah the memories come flooding back
I first read this book as a child many years ago when it was first published. I am now sixty but the memory of this book and it’s predecessor The Weirdstone of Brisingamen are as fresh as ever. I have also walked the Edge and found Stormy Point and the Holy Well and the Goldenstone as well as other places in the books. They are as good as I remember them but better for being audiobooks and the magic still runs through them.

One of my favourite books
Alan Garner is an author who, if you have not yet discovered his books, you should immediately take up. At first glance, they seem to be Young Adult fantasies, and I suppose that they are, strictly speaking. In addition, the earlier books (The Wierdstone of Brisingamen, The Moon of Gomrath, The Owl Service) were fist published in the 1960s, so there is a less-than-modern tone to them. Don't let that put you off.
He is closely tied to the geography and mythos of his home, and he brings that area to life as do few other authors. The landscape and the people come alive at his touch, and the otherworldly characters become an integral part of the lives in the book.
As with the best fantasy, the hidden world is interwoven with the world around us, and he gives you the sense that, if you just been there a moment earlier or later, you would have been drawn in yourself.
The reading by Philip Madoc gives you the accents (but not so thick you can't comprehend) and differentiates the characters clearly. I have to say that his voices are not far off the ones I imagined when reading. He is an accomplished actor, and the readings are as magical as the books.
Highly recommended.
