Summary

He’s in awe of its history. He thinks it's beautiful in the rain. But he’s not ready for what’s stirring below the surface of Loch Ness.

When you’re the editor of a successful investigative journal, you don’t dash around Scotland chasing after loch monsters. But Gill McArdle didn’t believe in unicorns either, and speaking honestly, he was fortunate to walk away from that one.

He’s a scientist, and not one of the wild-eyed optimists spending their days, scanning the loch for a creature. And here’s his problem. With every passing hour, evidence mounts that something is stirring. Far to the north, an unusual animal carcass is discovered in Caithness. In the west, the disappearance of a fishing boat remains unexplained. And as Gill follows the data, his investigations lead him, reluctantly, to the banks of Loch Ness. Still skeptical about the increasing sightings below Urquhart Castle, he reopens an old archaeological site in his search for answers. In a crushing realization, he is forced to admit that danger lurks in the Great Glen’s deepest waters.

Love the narration and am enjoying the story lines in this series, a bit different to my usual listens. Looking forward to the next book.

Loved story

The fact that narrator repeatedly mispronounced a word made me not enjoy it as much as I could have!

Brilliant series!

I really love this series. It takes you to many intriguing places across Scotland and blends geography with science and folklore. The characters are well drawn with interesting backstories and the narrator does a brilliant job of bringing them to life. I just wish he could pronounce loch in Scots rather than lock - there are a lot of lochs in Scotland.

Excellent follow up to The Bone Trap

I absolutely loved the first book on Audible. It was the first time I had come across this author and I was intrigued as to where book 2 would go. It didn’t disappoint, with a fabulous blend between science, mystery, and myth - blended around the edges by something that feels like it may be unpicked further as the series progresses.

Fabulous writing, great narration, and an interesting and compelling tale. Would strongly recommend reading, and look forward to seeing more of this series on Audible!

Interesting

I loved the first volume of this series, and this pleased me too. Only criticism was the narrator. Excellent tone, good range of 'voice' but the mispronouncuation of loch as lok constabtly irritated. Looking forward to third volume.

Great story!

I thoroughly enjoyed the story. The thing that spoiled it for me was the Scottish narrator’s apparent inability to pronounce the word “loch”. He kept referring to the body of water under discussion as a “lock” which has an entirely different meaning and was quite confusing . It was a constant irritation throughout an otherwise enjoyable performance.
