Summary

Set in modern day Moscow, Night Watch is a world as elaborate and imaginative as Tolkien or the best Asimov. Living among us are the "Others," an ancient race of humans with supernatural powers who swear allegiance to either the Dark or the Light. A thousand-year treaty has maintained the balance of power, and the two sides coexist in an uneasy truce. But an ancient prophecy decrees that one supreme "Other" will rise up and tip the balance, plunging the world into a catastrophic war between the Dark and the Light.

When a young boy with extraordinary powers emerges, fulfilling the first half of the prophecy, will the forces of the Light be able to keep the Dark from corrupting the boy and destroying the world?

Very entertaining

This book is very entertaining and I could not stop until I had read the whole book. I loved the mix of characters and the plot of the book. You can listen to the book whilst basking in the sun in the park or whilst taking a walk. Absolutely beautiful.

Charles Dickens write alike

If you could sum up The Night Watch in three words, what would they be?

The author describes the scene, the people, and the plot, in such detail that one can easily loose the story's line.

If you’ve listened to books by Sergei Lukyanenko before, how does this one compare?

N/a

What about Paul Michael’s performance did you like?

His voice tone has a tendency to wear on ones nerves.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

The second part,I turned off the stories, did absolutely nothing for me

Any additional comments?

Will not bother with this author again.

an incredible insight into the Russian view

truly outstanding, the pose, the character development, the world-building and most of all the dream of communism. a beautiful look at what it means to be human, with a focus on what true power really costs.

Enjoyable

A different, consistent, alternative view of vampires and the like. I found the Moscow setting added interest and enjoyed the narration.

Really engaging tale of the supernatural

I'll start by saying that I really enjoyed this book. Essentially it's a story about light and dark, good and evil, and all of the grey areas in between. The character development was very good and I found myself caring about them.the story contains a different twist to the common conceptions about vampires, werewolves, magicians and other beings. The ideas work well. I was hooked from the first few minutes and to be honest, the only downside is that books 4 and 5 aren't available in audio format yet!

Decent idea but lacks depth

Fairly enjoyable storyline, with some interesting ideas. The thing I struggled with most was the lack of depth in some of the characters. There was a significant amount of time spent in describing people's character and personality, yet somehow it still ended up feeling quite superficial, which was a shame.

I was expecting great things

After the amazing reviews the book has I was expecting great things however I was disappointed. It’s not the worst book I’ve listened to but it just wasn’t for me 😞

Tries too hard to be interesting

Just didn't manage to capture my imagination. There were moments where it was heading towards brilliance and then changed direction. Just wasn't interesting enough.

A Good Listen

This was only the second book I have listened to from this site. It was well made, the reader captured the different characters well. The novel itself is actually split into 3 smaller stories which are all interconnected and feature the same characters. The world that is created in the story is quite fascinating and I am now listening to the second book. I also plan to listen to the third (I've already brought it), but was disappointed to discover that there are more books in the series that are not available on Audible.
