About this listen

Exciting, vivid and enthralling - The Nightjar by Deborah Hewitt will take the listener on a journey involving betrayal, twisted loyalties, magic and the powerful ties of friendship.

Alice Wyndham has been plagued by visions of birds her whole life, and only her best friend Jen understands her terror. So when an accident leaves Jen in a coma, Alice is devastated. Then the mysterious Crowley reveals that Alice is an aviarist: capable of seeing nightjars, magical birds that guard human souls. And Jen’s nightjar has already flown to Death’s aviary, the Black Menagerie. Unless Jen and her soul bird can be reunited, she won’t recover - and only Alice can save her.

With Crowley’s help, Alice travels to the Rookery, a hidden city within the London she knows. Here, surrounded by others with unique powers, she begins to hone her own newfound talents. However, she’s being hunted by a faction intent on annihilating magic users. And is Crowley really working with her or against her? Alice must risk everything she holds dear to save her best friend - and uncover the strange truth about herself.

Really enjoyable story

Perfect escapism. The world is interesting, not too complicated, and full of humour and charm. The conversations are lovely and keep you interested. The decision making of the characters is… imperfect, quite a lot of the time. But overall, the wit and charm (and one of the best steamy scenes I’ve ever read) save this book and make it a bearable fault. I’m a 23 year old from the UK, and it was lovely to read a book from the perspective of someone vaguely similar to myself. When it comes to fantasy, often you have to read a 17 year old’s point of view which really gets boring.

Gorgeous story beautifully narrated

I’m a sucker for a magical London novel any time, but this one was so different. Centring the lives of women, outcasts, those who are different, it also plays with themes of power, passage and inheritance. I loved it!
