About this listen

Includes exclusive audio material and interview with the author.

As the Second World War raged across Europe, and the Nazi regime tightened its reign of horror and oppression, nine women, some still in their teens, joined the French and Dutch Resistance. Caught out in heroic acts against the brutal occupiers, they were each tortured and sent east into Greater Germany to a concentration camp, where they formed a powerful friendship. In 1945, as the war turned against Hitler, they were forced on a Death March, facing starvation and almost certain death. Determined to survive, they made a bid for freedom, and so began one of the most breathtaking tales of escape and resilience of the Second World War.

The author is the great-niece of one of the nine, and she interweaves their gripping flight across war-torn Europe with her own detective work, uncovering the heart-stopping escape and survival of these heroes who fought fearlessly against Nazi Germany and lived to tell the tale.

Survival !

A remarkable story of female triumph and survival when really their plight was almost hopelessly impossible.

Courage and determination

This story will move the listener. It is a true story of courage, determination and survival despite terrible odds. Juliet Stevenson’s narration is first class. I particularly liked the interview with the author at the end.

An untold story, beautifully told

I was surprised when I started to read this book as I was not 100% sure that I would enjoy it. Enjoy may be the wrong word but I quickly became totally absorbed by the stories, at times disturbed and upset, but always gripped by the lives of these nine amazing people.

Powerful, enthralling and awe inspiring. Important

A wonderfully enthralling and powerful work, which moves the listener from despair at the horrors which humans inflict upon one another, to awe inspiring tales of humanity and kindness. I was moved to tears and chills on so many occasions.
Beautifully written and performed. It's so important that the heroic acts of WWII are recorded, read and understood by future generations: This audio book is an invaluable record of these 9 incredible women's experiences and more over represents a rare insight into the enormous contribution made by WOMEN.

Brilliant in a deeply moving and eye opening way.

...each time I hear another journey thru WW2, in which I, too, lost family I never knew, I never lessen in the difficulty of trying to put real people in the situations where barbaric, soulless sub-humans did the things we know are true. The ironic part to this is the discussion at the end, during Covid. and the comments about being able to deal with it better, knowing these women made it....and now, a few years later, people of my generation, over 50's, have a deep sense that, as these sociopathic/psychopathic people overseeing the violence worldwide, that maybe our children and grandchildren and future generations do not understand how fragile their futures are.....it is frightening.
A brilliant listen, thank-you.

Amazing story

A book every woman and man should read .
Human endurance but mainly female just so sad these woman and all woman during that time were not recognised and celebrated , unfortunately far too often judged by friend and foe alike !
This book goes along towards putting that right

A very....

moving and informative book about how people survived through the ordeal of the Holocaust. The narrator is very good at using different voices for the characters.

The nine

A touching story of nine women. A story needed to be told. Plainly written and full of insight. Sometimes hard to hear but so glad I did

Lest We Forget

Harrowing. Inspiring. Uplifting. Frightening. Suspenseful. Dramatic. So many words to describe this story.
When I chose this audio book I thought it was going to be just that, a story based on reality. Nothing could have prepared me for the emotions I was to go through sharing, in some very small way, the experiences of this amazing group of women.

It is impossible for normal people to imagine the mentality of those monsters perpetrating these horrific acts of deliberate cruelty and barbarity.

War and other crises bring out the best and worst in humankind.

The best is the incredible courage, strength, resilience shown by these young women. Their apparent lack of bitterness is truly humbling.

Learning about their lives following their traumatic experiences was comforting in many ways. They seem mostly to have gone on to live relatively normal, mostly happy and surprising long lives.

In my mature years I have come to understand that my father suffered from what is now recognised as PTSD following his service during WW2, along with probably a whole generation. My father never talked to us about what he went through, it was my grandmother who told me about it.

Brilliantly researched and written. Equally brilliantly narrated.

We must never let this happen again.
