Summary

Includes exclusive audio material and interview with the author.

As the Second World War raged across Europe, and the Nazi regime tightened its reign of horror and oppression, nine women, some still in their teens, joined the French and Dutch Resistance. Caught out in heroic acts against the brutal occupiers, they were each tortured and sent east into Greater Germany to a concentration camp, where they formed a powerful friendship. In 1945, as the war turned against Hitler, they were forced on a Death March, facing starvation and almost certain death. Determined to survive, they made a bid for freedom, and so began one of the most breathtaking tales of escape and resilience of the Second World War.

The author is the great-niece of one of the nine, and she interweaves their gripping flight across war-torn Europe with her own detective work, uncovering the heart-stopping escape and survival of these heroes who fought fearlessly against Nazi Germany and lived to tell the tale.

Incredible detailed story of true heroism

This story is the best account of these times I’ve encountered. The narrator is an asset to the story. I love how the story introduces the characters then works forward and sometimes backwards to give you a great understanding. Brilliantly written poignant & moving.

Compelling and truly inspirational story

One of the best books I have ever read/listened to. This is an inspirational and uplifting story of triumph in truly dark times. The bravery and endurance of these heroines is unsurpassed in modern times and the excellence of the storytelling and the narration add to the experience which is deserving of everyone’s attention. Reading/listening to this will change your life and will make you realise that nothing in life should ever be taken for granted.

Amazing story

A book every woman and man should read .
Human endurance but mainly female just so sad these woman and all woman during that time were not recognised and celebrated , unfortunately far too often judged by friend and foe alike !
This book goes along towards putting that right

Fabulous book, with an atypical story

Why atypical? We get to hear about less documented victims of the Nazis predation. human, passionate and moving story.

The Importance of True Friendship

An essential read. My eyes have been opened to the true struggle of people who were imprisoned by the Nazis during WW2. This true story shows the incredible strength between a group of amazing women who manage to escape from a death march at the end of the war. This story reminds us that we must continue to be vigilant to ensure this history never repeats itself.
