About this listen

After a shocking death at a luxurious Italian resort, two very different women must question everything—and everyone—they love in order to untangle truth from lies.

One year ago, Leah's feisty 21-year-old niece, Amy, mysteriously drowned near her family-owned luxury resort on the shores of Lake Garda. Now, Leah is returning to Italy for the first time since Amy's death. But what she finds upon her arrival shocks her: her sister, brother-in-law and surviving niece, Olivia, seem to have erased all memories of Amy and insist her death was an accidental drowning, despite murky circumstances. Leah knows she must look beyond the resort's beautiful façade if she is to uncover the truth of that night.

Meanwhile, in Derby, university counsellor Joanna is recovering from a surprising break-up when she is swept off her feet by a handsome bartender. But when she invites him into her home, Joanna quickly starts to realise that she doesn't know him as well as she thought.

What follows is a propulsive game of cat-and mouse as both women begin to realise that appearances can be deceptive—and that the darkest secrets often lie closest to home.

Started off well but became a little far fetched

I loved the premise of this book, love a good location thriller and love the Italian lakes also.
I am also a fan of Sofia Zervudachi from other audiobooks however I did not care for the very flat accent which she used for one of the characters - in fairness I am not familiar with the Derby accent so it could have been spot on, just it would have been nice if it were possible to have made the character seem more appealing.
It all started off well, bar the very flat accent but I did find it confusing as we switched from before to now - from Italy to Derby and I struggled to keep up with the characters.
By the time I had worked out who was who, I had rather lost interest as the story seemed to take a turn for the preposterous with strange high security "secret" villas and demanding mysterious VIP guests.
Also what was described as a PR consultant actually seeming to do the work of an advertising copywriter muddied the waters further and made me lose faith in the storytelling.
The story then really got a bit silly and I gave up as just could not go along with it anymore.
I never found out the reason behind the death on the lake but at that stage I could not seem to care.
Returning.
There really seems to be a lack of top class, well thought out gripping thrillers these days - but for those looking for a fabulous location thriller I really recommend the brilliant Hot Water By: Christopher Fowler or Sun Damage by Sabine Durrant which stand out head and shoulders above the recent releases or The French Girl by Lexie Elliot (2019) or the outstanding and evocative The Heatwave by Kate Riordan, beautifully narrated by Miranda Raison (2020).

Great story with well crafted characters and plot. Vivid writing. Un-put-downable! Will read more Helen Cooper.
