About this listen

The night before

Rupert's 30th is a black tie dinner at the Kentish Town McDonald's - catered with cocaine and Veuve Clicquot.

The morning after

His girlfriend Clemmie is found murdered on Hampstead Heath. All the party-goers have alibis. Naturally.

This investigation is going to be about Classics degrees and aristocrats, Instagram influencers and who knows who. Or is it whom? Detective Caius Beauchamp isn't sure. He's sharply dressed, smart, and as into self-improvement as Clemmie - but as he searches for the dark truth beneath the luxury, a wall of staggering wealth threatens to shut down his investigation before it's begun.

Can he see through the tangled set of relationships in which the other half live, and die, before the case is taken out of his hands?

Bitingly funny, full of twists, and all too close to reality, this is a stunning debut from your next favourite crime writer.

Good thriller ruined by weird vocal delivery

Ive listened to over 150 audible books and for the first time I had to increase the speed as it was driving me nuts. I think they have used some gizmo to take the readers breaths out and what happens is. there ..... is..... this ..... weird ........ pause..... between .... every. ..... sentence. Its like having a book read to you by the speaking clock.

Im not having a bash at the actors, I am sure they are great, but its either directed or edited in some odd way.

Stories good! its a bit preachy (rich white people are bad apparently).

Decent story, shame about the male narrator

The male narrator was really quite bad. His phrasing and stress was all over the place, and he spoke far too quickly for someone who doesn’t enunciate well. His “posh” accents were cringey and were sometimes applied to the wrong character. And if you’re going to narrate a book with Classical references, please look up the pronunciation first.
The female narrator was fine, if not very convincing with male voices.
The story was ok, I just wish I’d read it rather than listened to it.

I got the Gist

I got the gist of the story, I was impressed by my storyline writing skills which I had to make up for each time the male narrator said anything which was 80% of the book, just like all the other reviewers said / it’s hard to follow what he’s saying and in half of that I couldn’t even make out the words even after rewinding and turning up the volume and asking others if they knew what he was saying, he swallowed his words so I just gave up and made up my own plot .

Good story

This was a really good story with well-drawn characters. However the male narrator was terrible. Spoke too quickly and indistinctly

Mediocre

The story was ok, even good at times but the characters were stereotypical and uninspiring. The two narrator’s spoke at such a different level and pace I had to change the speed and volume each time they swapped, not a great hardship just inconvenient if washing up or on my bike etc. spoiler alert, the ending is just a bit naf and far fetched. Overall sadly underwhelming.

Struggled with this

Couldn’t get into this at all but did finish it.
Unlikeable cast of characters & the plot was not that interesting.
However, the male narrator was awful & like other have said, I really struggled to make out what he was saying.
Would not recommend this

A so so story ruined by the male narrator

Does nobody listen to an audio to make sure it sounds good? The male narrator was mumbling his lines to the point, I nearly gave up on it. Quite astonishing there is no quality control.

Male narration poor

I am a few chapters into this book and enjoying this story but I've had to turn the volume up, and the speed down when the male is narrating. I am having to strain to catch what he's saying and it's taking the pleasure away from listening. I was wondering if it was just me, and have come to read the reviews, (which with hindsight I should've done first). It's not just me. Similar refrain from other people. It's a shame because I don't know whether I'll persist and I would like to know the outcome of the story.

Really promising stuff

This is ambitious, intelligent, funny, angry writing and I look forward to the next in the series. Not 5 star yet but definitely on its way. I agree with the other reviewer who commented on the male reader letting the side down a bit - he didn’t differentiate between the voices sufficiently.

Incomprehensible Narration

Great story, but the person narrating Cauis Beauchamp had an utterly unintelligible accent. Ruined the book for me. I have no idea why he was selected. Singularly the worst narration I’ve ever listened to on Audible. I ended up buying it on Kindle so that I could finish the story.
