Summary

A rescued rogue...

Scandal has rocked the city of London. Colin Eversea, a handsome, reckless unapologetic rogue is sentenced to hang for murder and, inconveniently for him, the only witness to the crime disappears. Then again, throughout history, the Everseas have always managed to cheat fate in style: Colin is snatched from the gallows by a beautiful, clever mercenary.

A captivating captor...

Cool-headed, daring Madeleine Greenway is immune to Colin's vaunted charm. Her mission is not to rescue Colin but to kidnap him, and to be paid handsomely for it. But when it becomes clear that whoever wants Colin alive wants Madeline dead, the two become uneasy allies in a deadly race for truth. Together, they'll face great danger - and a passion neither can resist.

Contains mature themes.

Could have been so much better!

I really enjoyed the fun mystery and adventure of the story. I also very much enjoyed the two protagonists, Mad and Collin. But my issue was that the final phases of the love story felt rushed, which was only exacerbated by the fact that Justine Eyre, who usually have impeccably pacing, sped through the writing like lightning. There were never any pauses to absorb, and often even led to confusion.

So far the rest of the series that’s available is a bit better in its narration and written.

Pennyroyal Green comes to Audible! Don't miss it!

This is the first book in Julie Anne Long's Pennyroyal Green Series. It begins the arc of a storyline about the Eversea and Redmond families' curse that carries through all 11.5 books in the series, while providing a searing and unique story of romance and adventure with each book. But read them in order because no one writes with quite as much heart as Julie Anne Long, and you don't want to miss anything as she reveals more and more about the small town of Pennyroyal Green, in Sussex, England. A town that you simply want to move into just to sit and watch the denizens drink and gossip at the Pig and Thistle and witness more and more of the machinations of the Everseas and the Redmonds. I've read this series in print, TWICE, and I'm so excited that it has come to Audible!

A tough listen... hard to finish.

Struggled to finish. The narrator's portrayal of male characters is quite bad. She also does a poor job at accents and was also weak at interpreting and portraying changes of mood and pace in conversation. This would have been an easier listen with a more skilled narrator.

Action and mystery in this love tri-rectangle

I always have to preface my reviews with: “I HATE love triangles” because I really really really hate love triangles and if it weren’t for Colin’s constantly moaning about his love for another woman (only to realize in the last 30 minutes of the book that it’s actually Maddy he loves) I would have enjoyed this book. It has a really interesting action/mystery plot and Maddy is a GREAT heroine. She is the mastermind behind springing Colin from the gallows, she’s a self made woman with a dream and a tragic past. She’s basically bad ass! However she’s so great that I’m a bit sad she is saddled with and falls for Colin, she seems way too smart to fall for someone who is already in love with someone else. Whether or not Colin is “truly” and deeply in love with Louisa is beside the point, he clearly has been declaring this love for years, going around and screwing everything in skirts and declaring his love all over again. Gross. Just barf. But this paragon of womanhood (Louisa) is apparently so great that Colin does everything he can to get back to her and stop her from marrying his brother (who also loves Louisa). And frankly I can’t believe Colin’s late declaration after everything it seems so insincere. I have no faith that he’ll be faithful, and maybe Maddy doesn’t care (with her knowledge of Colin and up close experience with his past paramours she might not care if he messes around, she clearly know what he’s like) but I do - it’s just not a romance if I can’t believe there is love. Hell I’d prefer no one actually said the L word but believe the characters have those true feelings than have the L word bandied about like it’s meaningless (my experience with this book).
I would call this book more of an action/adventure/mystery with a romantic theme or thread. Colin and Maddy’s flight to find who framed Colin Eversea and tried to kill Maddy was a good time and the twist at the end was satisfying... the romance, was not.
The narration here was fine though all the male characters sounded essentially the same. But the acting and inflections were great!

No

Probably the most unromantic romance ever. More adventure than romance and a pretty boring adventure to boot. I never cared about either H/H.

The *sex scene* in the hayloft was completely without passion, romance or love. Just sex....and again boring sex at that.

I am a big fan of Justine Eyre but even her great narration couldn't save this jumble. Can't recommend...will most likely return.

Captivating

What a story. There’s depth and good writing and sensuality. The narrators male voices take some getting used to. The female character was strong independent flawed and intelligent. I so enjoyed this 5 star Audible listen that I’m trying the next in The series.

Steamy

Light-hearted, somewhat predictable, but a few twist towards the end complete the circular plot. Still, characters are pleasant and I'm interested to see what happens next.

Interesting story

Colin and Madeleine’s story was an interesting one but very fast developing, the whole thing happens in the span of a week…seems to be similar to book#5 which remains my favorite.

Horrible!!!

This book is horrible. Too many people introduced that seem to have nothing with the presumed plot. Too scattered. Never listened to this author before and will not again. A lot of nothings to I say was to make it longer. You could probably cut the time in half. Trying to finish but not sure I will make it. I just wasted a credit.

Slow, hard to finish

I kept reading about the Pennyroyal Green series so this is my first book by JAL. I don't think her style is for me. There was not enough chemistry or emotional connection between H and h. I went days without listening to the story and that is not the norm for me. If a story is good I will burn through the audiobook.
