A telepathic dog. An ancient prophecy. Two devious faeries. Abby Fletcher must unravel their connection when she is thrown into a world of unknowns after receiving a mysterious message from a frightening beast: The Red King must set me free. Determined to discover the meaning of this puzzling phrase, Abby sets off to explore a nearby Scottish mountainside in search of clues. What Abby doesn't realize, however, is that it's not a matter of where she will find her answers but when. Whisked back to the early 14th century, Abby must find the courage to solve the mystery of the Red King and save not only herself but a group of powerless captives wrapped up in a faerie plot.

A Wonderful Story

This is a wonderful book full of great characters that I adored.

A warm, funny and thrilling story which made me laugh aloud more than once. Listening to it I felt like I was burying my face in Finlay's warm green dog fur! I was genuinely sorry to get to the end of it.

Abby is a smart, brave and witty heroine but also feels completely real and normal and is easy to imagine being.

I thought the narration was also really well done and enjoyable, to this admittedly english listener the american and scottish accents sounded great, and all the characters came to life.

Although this is the first of a trilogy it is also very much a complete story but left with the promise of further adventures. For me that's perfect, I can't wait to hear more and immerse myself again in that world, but I'm also not left frustrated by either a cliff-hanger or an incomplete story. A personal peeve of mine with some other trilogy/series books.

I heartily recommend this for everyone, not just young adults. In many ways it reminds me of the best teen fantasy I read when I was teenager. Certainly the feelings it evoked reminded me somewhat of the work of the beloved Diana Wynne Jones, whilst different in writing style I think other fans of hers might enjoy this.
