Summary

From the bestselling author of What You Did comes a stunning psychological thriller. One party. Thirteen people. By 3.02 p.m., one of them will be dead.

The party should have been perfect: six couples from the same baby group, six newborns, a luxurious house. But not everything has gone to plan, and while some are here to celebrate, others have sorrows to drown. When someone falls from the balcony of the house, the secrets and conflicts within the group begin to spill out....

DS Alison Hegarty, herself struggling with infertility, is called in to investigate. She’s convinced the fall was not an accident, and finds the new parents have a lot to hide. Wealthy Ed and Monica show off their newborn while their teenage daughter is kept under virtual house arrest. Hazel and Cathy conceived their longed-for baby via an anonymous sperm donor - or so Hazel thinks. Anita and Jeremy planned to adopt from America, but there’s no sign of the child. Kelly, whose violent boyfriend disrupted previous group sessions, came to the party even though she lost her baby. And then there’s Jax, who’s been experiencing strange incidents for months - almost like someone’s out to get her. Is it just a difficult pregnancy? Or could it be payback for something she did in the past?

It’s a nightmare of a case, and as events get even darker it begins to look impossible. Only one thing is clear: they all have something to hide. And for one of them, it’s murder.

Average,

Quite a few topics covered; race, pregnancy, still-birth, relationship age-gap issues, infertility, stalking, post-natal depression, secrets............the list is endless and might be unpleasant for any reader who has experienced some of these things.
Some of the characters I found very annoying and the narrator's accent was strange. She pronounced words ending in 'a' and 'er' to sound like 'ah' e.g. the name Monica was pronounced 'Monicah '! The word 'pasta' weirdly came out as 'parster' - very posh!!!!
Doesn't anyone check the narration?? It really grated on me and due to the cost of audible I expect better.

Enjoyed it but predictable

A good story, easy to follow (not sure who these people are who are struggling!) but far too predictable, could tell what was going to happen early on. I did enjoy it though and would listen to the author again.

Slightly out off by the strange narration of words. Hard to explain but so many words were said in such a bizzare way. “Prons” for Prawns etc

Entertaining but predictable

Narration was quite good but the occasional mispronunciation was a bit off putting as was the strange way of saying 'a' as 'ar'. Particularly with characters names like Monica (Monicar)and Nina (Ninar)

Good story but motives fairly predictable early on

narrator quite good, but pronunciation of some words was a little odd. Good performance, especially considering the length of the book

Boring and predictable

I was hoping for a great story with a twist but it was just obvious in all counts - very average

Well told, engaging characters and a twisty plot

Good fun, a good gripping read, and bravely exploring some challenging topics. I enjoyed it a good deal and am going to find her next one now.

Love it. Very clever story line. Fresh.

I'm so glad these baby groups weren't around when I had my children! I would not have gone! Really loved hearing what goes on in these fringe groups. Men are learning fast, but many still have a long way to go to really share the work of creating the next generation equally. A really important job.
