Summary

Nothing will be as it was. Cities will crumble to ash. Ashen wastes will become lush and fertile. Rulers will serve, and servants will rule.

Pentamuria, the world of five kingdoms, is in a time of change. The power of the nobles and mages is threatened. War is upon them, although they do not know yet when or with whom. Thus, the mages are gathering in their capital, Ringwall, to prepare together against any possible enemy.

At this time, the orphan boy Nill is found by the Druids. He possesses considerable magical skills. So he is taken to Ringwall, where he is to be trained in the magical arts alongside his fellow students. Nill, who is an outsider, shows no respect for the traditions of the magical world, and challenges the ways of the mages.

Soon this mages start to ask themselves: Could this powerful stranger bring the foretold end of their reign?

If yes, Nill has to be dealt with. By whatever means....

Wow... Long rule Pentamuria...

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Hell yer

Any additional comments?

I loved this book, great characters that I became very invested with, really nice pace, and the author definitely left me wishing that the second book was out already. Yes its a little Harry Potter, but then all book since those films of that type are compared to those films, and for me this doesn't detract at all from the story. Derek Perkins is as always just so cool with his character voices.

Overall I would highly recommend this book.

Obtuse, slow and boring

This is the first audiobook that I've been unwilling to finish. I managed about 80% before giving up. The story didn't flow at all, the characters are uninspiring and many elements are thrown in by the author with little or no explanation behind them, leaving the listener to scrabble to catch up. I wouldn't recommend.

Excellent!

I am so glad to have stumbled across this author. This is the first book of the series and I enjoyed every second of it. A fantasy masterpiece. I have downloaded the second novel straight away and I’m hoping there are many more. I have listened to other books by the same narrator and this is just another gem. So easy to get lost in the fantasy world of magic. I highly recommend this story.

Highly Recommended for magic-lovers

Gripping from start to finish. Poetically written with such thoughtful choices of words unlike any other story I've read or heard. Was a joy to listen to.

A Promising and Steady Start

This is a story with great potential to be growing success or not. The story begins slow and seems to drag a bit here only because the the author has the burden of both introducing and convincing us of the world of Pentamuria and the order of things on one hand, and the coming of age of boy with mysterious and ancient magic on the other. In the last few chapters, his development and intrinsically important events are rapidly rushed through as if the author realised too late that readers would require a satisfactory ending in order to consider getting the sequel.
The main character, Nil, is at first portrayed as a highly intuitive, intelligent and curious boy with strong yet indiscernible magical powers. Then while enrolled at the capital’s magical centre of learning for nobles with magic, he becomes unimaginably and irritatingly naive, dull and even stupid. Then before we know it, after having stumbled into some archaic scripts and writings in a long forgotten underground caves, he’s able to decipher and grasp an ancient magic and use it to gain rapid power and promotions!!!
That said, given ample time and space to stretch out the next phase of the story, there is hope that the ideas and events will be better distributed and delivered. It’s an unusual story that could so easily become predictable and boring as it can become refreshingly different and captivating. I’m not totally convinced that I should get the whole series, neither am I totally put off.
The narrator is well established and liked and did a superb job, a major factor in enduring some of the tedious, slower paced chapters.
A good read.

Different and interesting

love the narrator, listen to him a lot. the story feels to have a somewhat predictable plot but with enough differences to keep your interest.
