Summary

An addictive story of friendship, millionaires, and secret enemies.

Best-selling novelist Agatha Christie will take you on a gripping mystery story set after the Great War where you’ll learn from the struggles of Tommy Beresford and Prudence "Tuppence" Cowley, two childhood friends who, desperate and out of work, decided to open their own business.

They started with an ad that read:

"Two young adventurers for hire. Willing to do anything, go anywhere. Pay must be good. No unreasonable offer refused."

Before they know it, they find themselves getting involved in a series of dangerous situations while trying to untangle a web of intrigue and deception that seems to have no end.

Listeners who loved her characteristic style and straightforward prose in the novels The Murder of Roger Ackroyd, Murder on the Orient Express, and And Then There Were None will also enjoy The Secret Adversary. A mystery story power-packed with surprises and suspense that will keep you listening late into the night.

Will these two young adventurers manage to get out of this chaotic and wild journey before it’s too late?

Disappointing!

Jonathan Waters did his best but sadly, as with many male readers, the female ‘voices’ are dire!! Are they never listened to by editors? Tuppence is young and vivacious but in this she is an elderly drawl sounding woman - painful to listen to, as are the other female voices. It would be better if men just spoke their female characters normally!
Sadly will not be listening to it again - sorry Jonathan x

Gave up. What was wrong with the narrator? Could no British speaker be found of even moderate talent? very disappointing.

Not one of Ms Christie's best

This isn't one of Agatha Christie's best works, the plot is rather silly and has quote a few plot holes, For some reason it also feels more dated that some of her works.

But it is the narration that really lets this audio book down, for example right at the start, he pronounces 'Ltd', short for 'limited' as literally 'ell tee dee'. Also the female voices are just plain odd, very unpleasant to listen to and also inconsistent, at times sounding almost manic.

There are lots of very good voice artists around who are way more capable than Jonathan Waters, I just wish that the producers of this had chosen one of them.

I am just glad that I have read several of the author's books, because if this was my first exposure to her work, I probably wouldn't read, or listen to, any more of her work.

Very predictable plot.

Disappointed by the obvious plot. Expected more of Miss Christie. Reader works hard to create an atmosphere but really quite tame.

Not One of her best and awful Narration

Not one ofher best novels - convoluted and a bit Nonsensical ( plot holes). The narration really ruined it - strange accents for characters - awful characterisation generally & particularly of Tuppence - lispy, Very odd accent and sounding demented and high Camp. It was difficult sticking with it to the end.

Poor narration

Narration really wasn't very good. Female voices in particular were really poor and even grating at times.

Dreadful narration.

Dreadful narration. Not only accents but pronunciation of words. When will the powers that be get narrators who can actually speak!

Literally the worst narration

I don’t know what nationality this narrator is, but his accents and mixed accents made this cringeworthy.

Good story

Voices are well done and add to each character. The story moves along well and the final chapter is revealing
