Story
Twelve-year-old Harp Delaney is an unusual child, quiet and intelligent far beyond her years. She would rather spend her days in the library of the grand Georgian house that she sees as her home than playing on the streets with other children. Her mother, Rose, is the reserved and ladylike housekeeper at the Cliff House. The local women envy her grace and poise while the men admire her beauty. She behaves not as a servant should, but as someone who belongs at the ancestral home of eccentric loner Henry Devereaux.

Summary
When Isobel Petty is orphaned, she finds herself being taken away from her home in India and sent to live with a distant uncle in England. On board the SS Marianna, she witnesses a shocking act – somebody being thrown overboard in the middle in the night. But when the ship’s captain insists that nobody is missing, Isobel and her two new reluctant friends must solve two mysteries – the identities of both the murderer and the victim – before they reach England and the culprit has the chance to escape.
Inspired by The Secret Garden and the golden age of crime writing, The Secret Detectives is a gripping, beautifully written historical mystery from an incredible new voice in children’s fiction – perfect for fans of Robin Stevens and Katherine Rundell.

Brilliant story beautifully read
Absolutely loving this story . The characterisation is delightful and the story, utterly compelling. Most importantly for me, this book conjures up how it is to be a child looking at the world through a child's eyes- which so few books really honestly do.
I want to be one of the Secret Detectives and I want to be on this mail ship with these children as my friends and I do not want to have nearly finished the book. Well, Ella Risbridger, I hope you are already penning the sequel!
Loved the reading too, which brought this magnificent story to life so beautifully.
Thank you
