Summary

Anthony Blake is in love with his best friend's sister, Sophia Elliot. But his plans to court her are put on hold when he is forced to resume his role as an undercover spy for the Crown. A secret document listing the names of the entire network of British spies - including his own - has been stolen. To protect Sophia, Anthony cuts off all ties to her and exchanges his life as an honorable earl for the facade of a flirtatious playboy.

Heartbroken and confused, Sophia travels to India, hoping to find healing in one of the most exotic regions of the British Empire. But the exotic land isn't as restful as she had hoped. Instead, she finds herself embroiled in a mystery of a missing sea captain, a possible murder, and a plot that could involve the prince of India. And when Anthony appears at the British Residency, asking questions and keeping his distance from her, she is stunned.

She still loves him, and, in her heart, she knows he loves her too. But how can she rebuild her relationship with him if he won't confide in her? Does she dare offer her heart to him a second time, or will their love be lost under the India sun?

Couldn’t enjoy narration

Writing is passable (though by no means in league of Joanna Bourne or Sherry Thomas), but the narrator is definitely not for me, as she always highlights the shortcomings of writing instead of doing the opposite. When mundane sentences are read aloud in an excessive voice, it is just irritating.

Full of Promise

it could have been a 5 star audio book but the characters were oh too sweet, to perfect.
There were times that I could smell the lush fragrance from India and I thought this is a beautiful story, this could become a movie, but then it all fell flat, the story line simple, not enough body.
Justine's performance was great as always.

Enjoyable.

Nice romance with misunderstandings and perils. I listened to all the previous steampunk novels by Nancy and all are good fun.

An original take on a Regency Romance.

Espionage and foreign travel (of both protagonists) married with Society Parties outside of the usual European milieu!

An admirable follow on to it’s predecessor, without treading over the same ground.

I wonder if there will be another tale featuring Charity…?

This was quite well read by Justine Eyre. I appreciated her skill with masculine voices.

Lovely escapism

I really enjoyed this novel, I listened to it while sewing and it was a great mystery. Just enough that you could guess some parts for yourself, but the plot twist wasn't at all predictable.

Brilliant tale

Brilliant tale of love, lost papers and a murder in India! A lovely story, very "Georgette Heyer" like with no sex scenes! Would read more of this author

narrator

No British person of that era would have used the American pronunciation of the word leverage, which has sneaked its way into Britain in recent years. Every time the narrator did this it grated a bit more.

A brilliant book

I loved this book. The narrator of course, makes the book even better. The storyline really catches your attention and I found myself listening to it every second I had spare.
