Summary

Sir Richard Kenworthy has less than a month to find a bride....

He knows he can't be too picky, but when he sees Iris Smythe-Smith hiding behind her cello at her family's infamous musicale, he thinks he might have struck gold. She's the type of girl you don't notice until the second-or third-look, but there's something about her, something simmering under the surface, and he knows she's the one.

Iris Smythe-Smith is used to being underestimated. With her pale hair and quiet, sly wit she tends to blend into the background, and she likes it that way. So when Richard Kenworthy demands an introduction, she is suspicious. He flirts, he charms, he gives every impression of a man falling in love, but she can't quite believe it's all true. And when his proposal of marriage turns into a compromising position that forces the issue, she can't help thinking that he's hiding something...even as her heart tells her to say yes.

This final installment of Julia Quinn's delightful Smythe-Smith quartet is witty, romantic and utterly addictive - guaranteed to make you smile, while tugging on your heartstrings.

Tedious

The Hero is a hypocritical Cad, who likes to throw his weight around.
The Heroine's character is built up to be intelligent, strong and kind. However, this all goes out the window, when he touches her. She spends most of the time begging and craving for his attention. A delaying tactics is thrown in, so some sex can be described.
The unveiling of the diabolical plan takes forever; he berates himself on his cruel and selfish plan to use an innocent woman. He has no choice, is marrying her, giving her all his worldly goods etc, etc. He will depend on her kind heart to forgive him. She has tolerate and always forgiven, her irritating younger sister. Naturally this will spread to her lying, manipulative husband, who demands obedience from his wife, to forefill the plan he is forcing on his womenfolk.
None of the main characters are appealing, the secondary ones come out better

Secrets, Deception, Lies

'The Secrets of Sir Richard Kenworthy' is the final audiobook of The Smythe-Smith series by Julia Quinn.

Sir Richard Kenworthy needs a wife immediately to avoid a family scandal, and so decides the annual Smythe-Smith Musicale is the perfect place for this. Iris Smythe-Smith catches his eye, and they quickly marry. Iris, however, does not know the true reasons for the hasty arrangement. Sir Richard definitely has good intentions and reasons for his behaviour, but as may be expected, his plan is absolutely the wrong one. Iris, however, is an amazing counter-foil. She is thoughtful, considered, and intelligent, and eventually, her ideas lead to a satisfying HEA. I loved Iris, I thought she was an amazing character.

This book has a different feel to it than the other books in the series. The dialogue and story telling is still brilliant, but this book actually has a more serious undertone and thus less lighter comedy moments that I expect from a Julia Quinn book. I enjoyed this change of tone and more gritty plotline.

This audiobook has lively dialogue, an engaging plot that I found quite gripping, and characters who were complex and deceptive. These characters definitely redeemed themselves by the end. Great narration from Roselyn Landor really brought the story to life.

4 Triumphs

I have really enjoyed the 4 audio books in this series. Every story different and original but all full of the same charm and wit.
They have all been brought to life by the superb narration by Rosalyn Landor.

Book 4 is better than book 3

Unfortunately this book isn’t great either - drags on and on until one is informed what it is all about

Considering the time in which this story takes place makes the whole story and the Happy End ridiculous- as Society in those days wouldn’t have forgiven such a plot

I think I shall give up on Julia Quinn now …

The sex scenes never seem to stop and start to get boring

You’ll want to give the Lord a good head slap!

It will frustrate you, HE will frustrate you, you will wish iris would give him that head slap. But it all works out in the end.

PS - I do not condone lying to your wife!
