Summary

Winner of the 2015 CWA Endeavour Dagger for Historical Fiction.

London, 1654. Oliver Cromwell is at the height of his power and has declared himself Lord Protector. Yet he has many enemies at home and abroad. London is a complex web of spies and merchants, priests and soldiers, exiles and assassins.

One of the web's most fearsome spiders is Damian Seeker, agent of the Lord Protector. No one knows where Seeker comes from, who his family is, or even his real name. All that is known of him for certain is that he is utterly loyal to Cromwell and that nothing can be long hidden from him. In the city, coffeehouses are springing up, fashionable places where men may meet to plot and gossip. Suddenly they are ringing with news of a murder.

John Winter, hero of Cromwell's all-powerful army, is dead, and lawyer Elias Ellingworth is found standing over the bleeding body, clutching a knife. Yet despite the damning evidence, Seeker is not convinced of Ellingworth's guilt. He will stop at nothing to bring the killer to justice - and Seeker knows better than any man where to search.

Stick with it for the plot and to move on to the rest of the series

The narrator is not as good as the other narrator for the subsequent books. However, you really should bear with it as the story is great, and the rest of the series are excellent and the narrator of those is infinitely better. You could start with the second novel, but you really should hear this first for the set up of all the characters and their situations. Try putting it at 1.1x reading speed to make it sound less like the reading of a eulogy.

Good story, narrator poor

This was hard going. overall the story was not bad, but the whispering , monotone narrator made it a tough listen.

Superb story, bring on the next instalment

This is a period of history I know little about & what I do know I don’t much like but this story was absolutely brilliant. Characters with back stories to tell which are gradually revealed but not so as to distract from the plot & a real who did it right to the end.

Also superbly narrated with a tone & style that suits the main character & helps to make him a person not just protagonist.

Superb

A great mixture of history, intrigue and people. I loved it although I’m not sure I like the main protagonist

A great story

A fascinating tale of intrigue and treachery, set within a vivid portrayal of life during the Commonwealth period, superbly narrated.

Narration not as bad as some would have you believe

A good tale, well told and also very well narrated. To be fair, it takes a little while to settle in, but the characterisation suits the story well and the voices of each character are easy to differentiate. Well worth a listen.

Great story terrible narration

I bought this after I had read the book which is just as well as otherwise I would have given up very early on
The story is really good set in the period of Cromwell
Characters are well crafted the plot is unusual
However the narrator is so dull and sounds completely uninterested in the story .
I tried to listen at 1.25 speed as suggested by another listener which did help
Thank goodness the next in the series is read by Jonathan Keeble otherwise I really wouldn't bother

Worth it in the end

I had a hard time getting into this one. The narrator had a lovely voice, but something about it allowed me to get frequently distracted, which is unusual for me. Too soothing? Anyway, the story was enjoyable, and in the end it was worth persisting.

A slow burner.

I took a while to get into this book, initially struggling to attune to the narrator's accent and delivery. However, I persisted and was rewarded with a tale that whetted my appetite to hear and to understand more about the times in which this book is set. My lack of awareness of the era of Oliver Cromwell may also have contributed to it being harder to get into it all at the start, but very glad I didn't give up.

Missing historical note and list of characters

Although the main text of the book is complete, the audio version is missing parts of the printed version - the historical note and the list of characters. Both are useful for being able to follow the plot, especially if you are not familiar with the history of the period. It's disappointing that they've been excluded.
