Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

Now a major motion picture starring Letitia Wright.

When identical twins June and Jennifer Gibbons were three, they began to reject communication with anyone but each other, and so began a childhood bound together in a strange and secret world. As they grew up, love, hate and genius united to push them to the extreme margins of society and, following a five week spree of vandalism and arson, the silent twins were sentenced to a gruelling twelve-year detention in Broadmoor.

Award-winning investigative journalist Marjorie Wallace delves into the twins' silent world, revealing their genius, alienation and the mystic bond by which the extremes of good and evil ended in possession and death.

Beautifully written and narrated

I really enjoyed this book. It’s written and read in a style that keeps you engaged throughout, it has a really nice pace and attention to detail and the narration is soft and easy to listen to. Very interesting story from start to finish. Only thing I wasn’t a massive fan of was the last hour was a couple of recaps of the whole story, not sure if it’s just because a part was added in 2022 but felt a bit unnecessary.

Wow

This story has been in my list for a while after hearing of the twins. Just amazing story. The injustice is just unbelievable. Thank you Majorie for telling their story.

an interesting account

however, the pace was a bit slow and it seemed somewhat repetitive. Glad I read it and will probably look out for the film but wouldn't re read it.

Repetitive

Gross injustice but this story is so repetitive. The final chapter is cut and paste of earlier descriptions.

Narration is annoying

The story is fine in itself. but the narration is awful.
Slow and overly punctuated for the most part, with an extremely annoying attempt at an American accent for chapters at a time.

Haunting. Tragic. Excellent book

I was gripped by this extraordinary and tragic story, brilliantly told by Marjorie Wallace - who I have admired enormously for years. This is a tale of staggering mistreatment by our very broken system; misunderstanding, misdiagnosis, resulting in tragedy for twins who speak to no one but each other. A must read.

Good

I enjoyed listening to this book. Very interesting, quite sad too that some twins can be like this.

Great local history!

I don’t remember the story about the twins but having listened to this book took me all the way back to when I lived in Haverforwest and I had friends in Furzy Park and all.
A great bit of local history and also a great story about how injustice was done to these girls just because they were different.
