About this listen
They have never seen a murder like it. A talented tattoo artist is using poison instead of ink. His victim is a young woman. And on her skin he's left a message: 'the second'.
Drafted in to investigate, NYPD detective Lincoln Rhyme and his associate Amelia Sachs find the scene has been scrubbed of evidence. All except for one trace - a scrap of paper that connects this case with one they will never forget. And like the Bone Collector before him, Rhyme and Sachs find themselves pitted against a twisted serial killer choosing his victims seemingly at random, a perpetrator who plans his work to the last detail, in a deadly contest with any who try to stop him.
But how close is his connection with that old case? What is the meaning of the words tattooed in poison on the skin of first victim? And where will he strike next?

"The most creative, skilled and intriguing thriller writer in the world...[Deaver] has produced a stunning series of bestsellers with unique characterisation, intelligent characters, beguiling plots and double-barrelled and sometimes triple-barrelled solutions." ( Daily Telegraph)
"The pace is terrific, the suspense inexorable, and there is an excellent climax... If you want thrills, Deaver is your man." ( Guardian)

Mediocre
An OK story but nowhere near as gripping as some of his others. Lots of nice twists and turns which keep you guessing but overall it's a bit hard to believe. The thing that really bugged me though is, whilst the majority of his voices are OK, the narrator's voice for Rhyme which is ridiculously over-dramatic. It makes every action sound impossibly suspensful. I'm sure I'll listen to more but it's not his best work.

Struggled to finish
Not a fan of American narrators.
Otherwise okay.
Will not go for the same author again. Good story but not for me

Twists & turns
Right from the start you’re immersed into the story and there’s no let up throughout. Kerry has a distinct voice at at first I kept thinking of him as Reacher(Lee Child) as he has read a lot of his books.
However that disappeared quickly and I soon forgot and became engrossed in the book.
Well worth it!

not my cup of tea
Not my usual genre but purchased on a 2 for 1 credit deal so thought I would try something different. Deaver obviously has a very large and enthusiastic fan base and I had enjoyed the film version of the bone collector. The performance was excellent and the wonderful voice of Jeff Harding kept me listening to about chapter 50 and then I started skipping through to the predictable ending. The intricate plot was unconvincing and the characters 2 dimensional. I will not be returning to Deaver .

Stunning
Always a great performance by Jeff Harding. I've loved everything he's done from Jack Reacher to this to others. Great story, well paced.

Gripping!!
Vintage Jeffrey Deaver with twists and turns when you least expect them!! I love the character of Rhyme and Deaver really does have the ability to bring him right in front of your eyes.
