About this listen
Mercedes Lackey magical A Tale of the Five Hundred Kingdoms series continues with a captivating new adventure…
Heavy is the head - and the eyelids - of the princess who wears the crown....
In Rosamund's realm, happiness hinges on a few simple beliefs. For every princess there's a prince. The King has ultimate power. Stepmothers should never be trusted. And bad things come to those who break with Tradition....
But when Rosa is pursued by a murderous huntsman and then captured by dwarves, her beliefs go up in smoke. Determined to escape and save her kingdom from imminent invasion, she agrees to become the subject of one of her stepmother's risky incantations - thus falling into a deep, deep sleep.
When awakened by a touchy-feely stranger, Rosa must choose between Tradition and her future between a host of eligible princes and a handsome, fair-haired outsider. And learn the difference between being a princess and ruling as a Queen.

Trials and tribulations and a bird that says Doom!
I loved this, the story was fun if a little confusing at times. The ending seemed a little superfluous and rushed that could have been left off and made into a short story but it didn't take away from my enjoyment of the rest of the book. I just had to go back and listen again to work out what was going on.

BOOOOOORRRRING!!!!
Would you try another book written by Mercedes Lackey or narrated by Gabra Zackman?
I am a big fan of Gabra Zackman, so I would most definitely listen to some other audio book narrated by her. I'm not so sure about Mercedes Lackey however.
Would you ever listen to anything by Mercedes Lackey again?
As I've already said I don't know. I have read book written by Mecedes Lackey, and they were not bad. Perhaps its just this one series of books that doesn't appeal to me. I found them excruciatingly boring.
Have you listened to any of Gabra Zackman’s other performances? How does this one compare?
Yes I have listen to other performances by Gabra Zackman, and I think she is a superb narrator. As with the other audio books Ms Zackman has narrated, she has done a wonderful job with what I consider very poor material. In fact, her performance was the only thing that kept me listening to the end of the book.
You didn’t love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?
The only redeeming feature was Gabra Zackman's narration. The book was just too dull.
Any additional comments?
It may be obvious that I am a fan of Gabra Zackman. It was Ms Zackman's narration that kept me listening to this, and the other books in this series, because the books themselves are very slow and boring. In each of the audio books in this series, you have between 9 and 12 hours of listening time, and in each of the books, only about the last hour and a half to two hours has anything like action going on, the rest of the time seems to be spent setting the scene. In truth, if not for some more adult scenes, I would have thought that these books were written for young children, as they were at times a little on the silly side. All in all, these books are not for me, and I will be returning them so that I can purchase something more interesting. I will definitely look out for other titles narrated by Gabra Zackman, but I'm not so sure about Mercedes Lackey.

Nowhere near as good as previous books in the series.
I’ve really enjoyed the series up until this book, which I found disjointed and underwhelming. One minute Lilly is trying to rescue Rosamund and the next she’s being accosted by a prince, with the middle bit completely omitted. I found it quite tedious and not a story that I was desperate to get back to. If I’d started with this book, it’s unlikely that I’d have bothered to listen to more from this author but, fortunately I listened to them in order, even though they are stand alone stories. I’m about to start book 6 and I’m hoping it’s going to be a return to form.
