About this listen
Plato called it “daimon”, the Romans “genius”, the Christians “guardian angel”; today we use such terms as “heart,” “spirit,” and “soul.” While philosophers and psychologists from Plato to Jung have studied and debated the fundamental essence of our individuality, our modern culture refuses to accept that a unique soul guides each of us from birth, shaping the course of our lives. In this extraordinary best seller, James Hillman presents a brilliant vision of our selves, and an exciting approach to the mystery at the center of every life that asks, “What is it, in my heart, that I must do, be, and have? And why?”
Drawing on the biographies of figures such as Ella Fitzgerald and Mohandas K. Gandhi, Hillman argues that character is fate, that there is more to each individual than can be explained by genetics and environment. The result is a reasoned and powerful road map to understanding our true nature and discovering an eye-opening array of choices - from the way we raise our children to our career paths to our social and personal commitments to achieving excellence in our time.

Lots of biographies
Good if you’re interested in biographies of famous figures, particularly Americans from the 20th Century.

Aesthetics meets psychology
I imagine this is what psychology was like in the beginning individual cantered not a symptom or diagnosis. Seeing the individual as unique.
Though the author meant to shock I'm sure, he did not shock me much of what he states is written in the Bible though using other language. It is a beautiful life affirming book on the in

Important book
This book corrects all sorts of shallow and short sighted concepts in western psychology. Hillman likes to put the cat amongst the pigeons, sometimes seemingly with a mischievous twinkle in his eye. Either way, his ideas make essential corrections to modern materialist ideas.

Great, affirming, new perspective
Gave me a new perspective on life. Found one chapter a bit boring but mainly i loved it and i feel reassured by reading this book. It made me think and reassess concepts of life, character, fate, causation, goals, in a really special way.

robotic reading obsfucates a complex book
robotic reading obsfucates a complex and challenging book ... one of those frustrating lessons where you wish you had a hard copy, but your taste for another course has been spoiled by the starter

Robotic narration mercilessly slays fascinating subject, rendering it unlistenable
If this narrator isn’t an AI, then he’s got the most boring, robotic and unfeeling voice I’ve ever heard come from an actor - a completely inappropriate choice for such meaningful subject matter - I was so disappointed. It completely put me off. Surely, if it’s worth making into an audiobook in the first place, then it’s worth forking out a little more for someone who knows what it’s like to be a human? A wise and kindly old woman, for example - someone who can relate to the content from personal experience then impart some relevant feeling in their delivery. Pooh.
The story part of my review got 2 stars - well that’s just because the narration was so off-putting I never got to hear it. I imagine it’s probably quite good.
