Summary
When creatures that lurk in the dark dare to venture out into the world, lives are changed forever.
Conrad lives a quiet rural life with his parents in the Northlands. During one fated night, his world is turned on its head, as nightmares become reality. While his Northlands blood cries out for revenge, Conrad’s head tells him surviving is the best he can do.
Rescued by a motley band of mercenaries, Conrad embarks on a life he could barely have imagined. As new challenges, friends, and enemies present themselves, Conrad knows that one day he will have to face the evil that so altered his life, and when that day comes, he must be ready.

Had potential but flawed, he said
Story is a pretty well worn coming of age kinda fantasy. I enjoyed the setting, a quasi renaissance type era. Not sure the narrator does it justice though,he goes for his stock Colonel Blimp voice for all military types while the rest of the voices drift between Moscow and Mumbai often for the same character. My main gripe is the character dialogue. Pretty good descriptive passages are followed by dialogue that is from nursery age book. Example; “Everyone ready” Nicholi said. “Whenever you are captain”. Franz said. “Let’s get moving then”. Heidi said. This is just a minor example, there are lengthy passages of this. The he/she said at the end of most of the dialogue sentences made it lifeless and really grated on me. I would be reluctant to use another credit on this series.

Narration Lets This Story Down
For those of you captivated by the characters brought to life by Derek Perkins and Simon Vance in Duncan M Hamilton’s first two series of books will be sorely disappointed by John Lee’s efforts in The Squire. The brusque Northlands men with which we’d come to love has somehow become filled with exotic (almost a Arabic) sounding noblemen, which seems out of place for the narrative. The worst thing is, everybody sounds exactly the same and it’s difficult to figure out who is meant to be speaking. I gave this an hour and although the story was really getting going I just couldn’t listen any further - it was when the story spelled out that Conrad “hears an accent he’d never heard before” and out comes the only voice that John has given every single character that I had to stop. I’d like to hear this again with another narrator and may consider reading it on Kindle but won’t continue this series with John. Sorry.

Another great performance by John Lee
Being a big fan of the Spellmonger series, I've heard John Lee's ability to bring a story alive with brilliant narration but his work on the squire is exceptional. He takes the characters and through his narration he makes them easily recognisable and relatable, moving the story along at great pace. As this is clearly the first in hopefully a full series of books I look forward to hearing more about Conrad and his fellow characters in the book 2, I can't wait.

“It can always go better or worse but how it went is all that matters”
A great book and looking forward to the next in the series. Maybe not as good as the other books by Duncan but it may just be the narrator letting it down slightly.
John seems a great narrator in his own right, but trying to fill the shoes of Simon Vance and Derek Perkins is a hard ask. There’s a similarity that is distracting and he just doesn’t have the same atmosphere unfortunately.

this was a very well narrated and interesting coming of age medevil fantasy , there's elements of magic and otherworldly aspects that slowly creep their way into the story . with a finale that has left me very curious as to where the authors going to go with it . highly reccomend if you're looking for a not too heavy but enjoyable read

Similar Feel to Wolf of North + Society of Sword
Narration - Threw me off at first, as nearly all the accents are thick and some were hard to tell apart, but by then end the characters feel familiar.
Plot - At first it seemed like another "bad guy gets powerful magical artifact that lets him do anything," but gladly it took a bit of a different turn as more of the plot unfolds. It felt less gripping than some of Hamilton's other titles, but less action/suspense now set us up for more character and plot development down the line.
Characters - Unlike most fantasy series, by the end of book 1 the main character still feels like an average guy in extraordinary circumstances, with one exceptional ability but nothing overpowered. I hope this continues even as the character grows into his own more! Backstory is minimal for everyone other than the MC, but there is significant development of the overall Middle Sea world's history (for everyone who's read Hamilton's other titles).
Overall - Definitely worth it for readers new to the Middle Sea or those already familiar with Hamilton's world, but don't expect to be swept up quite as quickly as some of his other titles.

Young boy goes on adventures
I was hoping for a more original world, but it's the usual "sell swords" and coming of age story. It does hold the interest, bizarrely despite the obvious copies of Harry Potter (young boy goes to school, bullying, and adventures with a little magic) and Game of Throne "icy bad guys" (won't say more and be a spoiler). The Intelligensia should have a different name since she's not very intelligent--more like a typical cope going through the motions-rather than thinking outside the box. Thank goodness for a 14 year old boy who can!
A good beach read.

Great Story, Meh narrator
Story was a great start to a new series.
Narrator tried, and you can tell, but all of his voices sounded similar and it made it hard to tell who was speaking sometimes.
Conrad seems like an interesting character, and all his adoptive dads are cool with enough depth to keep them interesting, though I hope we get to learn more about them as Conrad grows.
