About this listen
A fantasy epic of freedom and empire, gods and monsters, love, loyalty, honour, and betrayal, from the acclaimed author of GODBLIND.
For generations, the forests of Ixachipan have echoed with the clash of weapons, as nation after nation has fallen to the Empire of Songs – and to the unending, magical music that binds its people together. Now, only two free tribes remain.
The Empire is not their only enemy. Monstrous, scaled predators lurk in rivers and streams, with a deadly music of their own.
As battle looms, fighters on both sides must decide how far they will go for their beliefs and for the ones they love – a veteran general seeks peace through war, a warrior and a shaman set out to understand their enemies, and an ambitious noble tries to bend ancient magic to her will.

"The Stone Knife has everything you’d hope for in a Stephens novel: sharp action, cracking pace, and a brutal disregard for our poor feelings. A compelling story of clashing cultures, of duty and ambition and change, that will leave you desperate for the next instalment." (Sam Hawke, author of City of Lies)
"A brilliant, grim, and joyous opening to a bloody new trilogy." (Stewart Hotston, author of Tangle’s Game)
"An epic tale about the bloody repercussions of expansionism. The Stone Knife explores the cruelty of empire through the eyes of characters from vastly different backgrounds, weaving a tapestry of conflict, injustice, and determination." (E.J. Beaton, author of The Councillor)

A stunning story and setting!
I very much enjoyed Anna's previous series and yet, absolutely honestly, I found this book left her previous works standing!
What a deep, heartfelt story of complex characters, emotional relationships, wondrous settings, horrific and joyous moments alike, and a scary reflection on our own world, both historically and in the present.
I found the overall plot very poignant and heartbreaking, but utterly believable, despite the exciting and mysterious otherworldly elements.
An absolute must read for fantasy fans and a superbly refreshing setting.

5/5
For fans of: R. Scott Bakker (The Prince of Nothing/Aspect-Emperor); Anna Smith-Spark (Empires of Dust); Mike Brooks (The God-King Chronicles); Graham Hancock (War God); Simon Jimenez ('The Spear Cuts Through Water'); George R.R. Martin (A Song of Ice & Fire).
I: The Stone Knife (5/5)
II: The Jaguar Path (5/5)
III: The Dark Feather (5/5)
It’s no wonder Stephens is a writing mentor, as The Drowned Song trilogy is a masterclass of storytelling from start to finish. I was constantly surprised, delighted, and horrified by this world and its characters, all of whom were conflicted in ways that felt organic and distinctly human. I had no idea where the story was heading, right up to the final bitter conflicts and their aftermath, but I left the series immensely satisfied and awed.

Probably a great story,
I just couldn't keep up with the characters and plot, just not for me. I won't rule out trying to re read in future.
