Summary

KATE

I tore out of rehab to win my husband back. It’ll work, too. He just needs to see that I’m clean, that I’m on my feet again.

Until that happens, though, I’ve only got one guy in my corner—Beck, my husband’s best friend, who takes me in against his will and keeps me sane.

Living with Beck is easier than I expected. And fun. Except I’ve got a long history of wanting things I’m not supposed to want.

And Beck may be the most dangerous of them all.

BECK

Kate had nowhere else to go—helping her out is the right thing to do. Though if she thinks the fact that she’s still married to my best friend means she’s safe walking around my house in nothing but a t-shirt…well, I’m somewhat less sure.

Because maybe Caleb could overlook her. Maybe Caleb could fail to notice her.

But from the moment we met, Kate’s been the only thing I could see. And no matter what she’s telling herself, she wants me just as badly as I want her.

Emotional rollercoaster

That wasn’t an easy read, for several reasons.

First of all, the female character isn’t lovable. We learned about Kate in the previous book, about her loss and her addiction and the way she betrayed her husband. But it was easy to feel a bit of sympathy for her. Then she starts this book by saying she’s going to get her husband back, no matter how. As he’s already in a relationship, and he’s asking for a divorce, it won’t be pretty. Instant dislike. And without spoiling anything, let me tell you that she’s ready to fight dirty. This is Kate’s book, Kate’s story. Kate’s point of view. And she knows she’s bad, but she can’t help herself.

But the author? She’s good. She gives us Kate’s childhood and her disillusions. She shows us Kate’s need for a family and stability. Kate’s always looked for happiness in the wrong place–her husband, drugs… She has so much grieving to do, and not just for her daughter, whose loss is at the center of Kate’s story. She lost her mother too, and a stable childhood. She needs to dive into her past to build a future, and that’s what this book is about. This is her redemption story.

Because happiness was beside her all along. That’s Beck. They’ve had feelings for each other right from the start, but Kate was already chasing her dreams with Caleb, and Beck wouldn’t betray his best friend. But he understood Kate. He supported her when Caleb wouldn’t. Even knowing Caleb has already moved on, Beck doesn’t dare seducing Kate. To a point, of course.

He has some growing to do too. He doesn’t do things, he lets them happen to him. He works at the bar his mother left him, even though it’s a burden. He never confronted Caleb about the way he treated Kate. But having Kate back in his life forces him to take initiatives.

Through Kate and Beck, but also through other characters, motherhood is the main theme of the story. What does it mean to be a mother? What lengths are mothers ready to go for their children? What happens when a mother loses her child? What is the father’s place? There are as many situations, and as many answers, as there are characters, really.

As I said at the beginning, there are other reasons for it to not be an easy read. Some of the elements in this book could be triggering. Substance abuse, death of a child, mention of past psychological abuse… If you don’t like angst in your romance, this book isn’t for you. Not that there’s no humor at all. But the themes are heavy.

The female narrator was perfect for Kate. You can hear that she understands and loves the character, she brings life to all her different sides. As for the male narrator, he did a great grumpy Beck. If you aren’t afraid of emotional rollercoasters, you should definitely give Beck and Kate a chance.

They Just Get Better & Better!

I think this one may be the best yet! I have been loving 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐮𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐫 𝐒𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝙨𝙤 much. From the first words to the last, she hooks me & this one was no exception, with masterfully told story lines and beautifully chiseled characters! I definitely recommend this one as well as the whole series!

I met Kate in book 2 & well, I didn't think she would be great here, but I was wrong. Bad ways & good ways, her story unraveled itself and absolutely hooked me. She had lots of pain in her life, lots of things to figure out & once she came back from rehab, she has no choice but to stay with Beck, her husband's best friend.

Beck was a character!! I loved him & his grumpy, cinnamon roll self! When Kate comes back into his life, it's all bets off & sparks flying as their chemistry lights the sky! Seeing him with Kate, seeing he he's always felt her despite him being her ex's best friend, was wonderful!

Now for the narrators for the audio. 𝐶𝑜𝑛𝑛𝑜𝑟 𝐶𝑟𝑎𝑖𝑠.𝑆𝑎𝑚𝑎𝑛𝑡ℎ𝑎 𝐵𝑟𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑚𝑜𝑜𝑟. It must be my era for them because I just can't get enough! Their duet for these characters was beyond perfect, putting their whole selves into these characters, breathing life into them. It was like watching a movie! 👩🏻‍🍳💋

Kate & Beck

Wow - what a ride this book was! I did have some struggles with the book but at the same time, I was intrigued and wanted to see Kate and Beck get their happily ever after. Although this could be a standalone I would encourage you to read book 2 first, as we first meet Kate in that book as well as Beck, Caleb, and Lucy. I felt the backstory gave me a better understanding.

Kate - has been away for over a year and upon returning, her hopes of reuniting with her husband are diminished. I honestly struggled to like Kate, her self-centered mindset along with the shenanigans she was trying to pull was off-putting. I had to remind myself that although she didn't come across as a nice person, she was dealing with an immense amount of grief and her addiction struggles. Beck and Kate did have some great chemistry and an undeniable connection. I do wish we had more from Beck's POV, he was all in but he needed Kate to be on the same page and needed him just as much. I was so ready for one of them to make the first move! This book is angsty and an emotional listen, I felt the author did an amazing job portraying the grief and dealing with the hard parts of addiction. The pacing was a little slow but the last 30% of the book really nailed the story and character growth. I was thrilled with how their happily ever turned out. A great way to have me enjoy Kate's character more and the redemption she deserved.

Narrated by Samantha Brentmoor and Connor Crais - they both voiced their characters flawlessly and had me in my feels. Another great addition to this series.

The Summer You Found Me

What a story!!!
Even better than the book before.

Kate, the Evil Queen
and Beck, the grumpy barowner

Kate really seems to be evil, but she is just an empty shell and just Beck knows the real woman she is.

Their story is so emotional, so deep, so twisted. I just love it.

I was listening to the audio and Samantha and Connor were pure perfection.

So, so good

I started this one not knowing if I was going to make it through it because I was really not a fan of Kate after the last book, but I loved Beck, so I gave it a chance. I'm so, so glad that I did.

My feelings about Kate have changed entirely. She was a broken woman who made bad choices, one that needed the time to heal and to see the truth of things without her emotions clouding what she saw. There were parts of the last book I hated Kate for the things that she did, and parts of this one that I hated Caleb for the things that he didn't. At the end of it all, I came to realize that they were both flawed individuals who needed to grow apart and heal themselves.

And then there's Beck. Good lord, this man! He's all gruff exterior and teddy bear center. There is no one that would have been as good of a fit for Kate as he is, and good grief did he earn it. Their meeting pulls at your heart strings, and then every moment after that, where things could have gone differently, will have your heart breaking for them.

This is a great slow burn, but that's not all it is. This book will put you through the wringer emotionally. My heart hurt, I cried, I laughed, I was angry, but most of all, I ended this being proud. Proud of all of the characters for growing, accepting, and blossoming.

I listened to this one on audiobook, and I can not recommend it enough. Samantha Brentmoor and Conor Craise brought these characters to life so well and made their story so much more impactful. Grab it when it comes out, if you can, and strap yourself in for an incredible ride.

Fantastic Story & Listen🎧Captivating & Emotional!

Elizabeth O’Roark pens another amazing novel that not only captivates your attention the entire time, but tugs on your heartstrings too. This book is Kate and Beck’s story and both characters have a connection with “Caleb” one of the lead characters of the second book, “The Summer I Saved You”. Beck and Caleb have known each other for years, and Beck was the first one to notice Kate and fell for her, but it was Caleb who pursued and married her. After going thru some hardships, Kate and Caleb’s marriage was on the rocks, and she left, and a heartbroken Caleb did not know when she would return. He had finally moved on with his life and was involved with someone else, and ready to make his separation with Kate official by filing for a divorce. Except Kate does not want a divorce, she was getting her feet back on the ground, recovering from her addiction and wanting her old life back to the way it was before it all fell apart. Beck owns and runs a bar that he inherited and is not something loves to do, but does it out of obligation. When Kate came back into town, she needed a place to stay and he could not refuse her. He knew it would not be easy because he still harbored feelings for her, deep feelings, and he could not help but watch out for her and make sure she did not fall into old habits. She has no clue about how he feels for her, and now she is on a mission to break up Caleb’s new relationship with Lucie, even teaming up with her ex-husband, who wants her and the children back. Kate’s fixation with getting Caleb and fixing their marriage, she failed to see what was staring her right in the face. The chemistry between her and Beck was undeniable, and the tension was fierce. It was heartbreaking to watch Beck pine for her while she still wanted Caleb. Wow, O’Roark put these two thru the wringer, my heart went out to both of them for different reasons. As always, the writing, plot and world building are fantastic, as are the character growth and development. I loved the complexity of the characters and all the layers of the story, all drama, angst, heartfelt emotions, and steamy romance. Elizabeth O’Roark, thank you for another amazing story and emotional rollercoaster ride.

🎧📚🎧And for the fantastic narration, Samantha Brentmoor and Connor Crais were the perfect cast to bring these characters to life and did so with a complete understanding of who they were portraying, giving each a voice that was both fitting and believable. Ms. Brentmoor was amazing in her role as Kate, grasping every aspect of her personality, from her vulnerabilities to her fierceness and all in between. Crais was just as amazing as Beck, also grasping every aspect of his personality, his pining, his pain to his caring side, with a hint of a bad boy. Both were equally fabulous performing the roles of the secondary characters as well. These two wonderfully talented voice artists make a great team, their voices complement each other and their performance elevates this already fabulous story to another level. Thank you for another amazing listen.

Intense, emotional, angsty!

I loved this book! This book wasn’t just a love story. It was also a journey of two flawed, broken, and damaged characters finding something beautiful. Beck was such an amazing, supportive character with so much depth. Kate was a little harder to like. She is real, complex, has flaws and issues, yet I ended up loving her character.

This was a beautifully written story of angst, hope, hurt, betrayal, and redemption. The author tackles a bunch of important issues which made this an emotional read. This was a very enjoyable book.

Samantha Brentmoor and Connor Crais were so perfect together. They brought this story and these characters to life in such an amazing way.

Amazing!

Kate is home and she wants her old life back. Clean now for several months, she is sure Caleb will be willing to give it another try. But she finds out, he has moved on and now she has no where to go. Beck, Caleb's best friend takes her in temporarily. Always having a crush on her, he knows this isn't a good idea but as time goes on, and things at the house become more heated, will he be able to resist her? Kate is trying her best to start her life over, but there is still that niggling feeling of wanting to get Caleb back. Will sabotaging his relationship work? Or will the feelings she is developing for Beck come into play? I love this series. All the characters are amazing, but I truly felt that Kate is one of a kind. She comes back with hope and no matter how many times she is knocked, she finds her inner strength to stay straight. Beck is hot and cold, and I love when he finally gives in. This is a wonderful addition to the series and a story that should not be missed.

Samantha Brentmoor and Connor Crais bring this gem to life with their amazing story telling. Each scene is packed with an emotional pull, from frustration to anger to passion and these two bring it alive. Brentmoor adds so much to Kate with her voice making it easy to feel her turmoil with each setback and move forward. Crais comes in as Beck with a loyalty that is easily felt to Caleb, holding him back and then the love just pouring out. I love this team, they work so well together and it was a joy to hear them.

Heartbreaking

Beck and Kate’s story had me going through a roller coaster of emotions. The first half of the book had me wanting to quit, I didn’t THANKFULLY!! Kate’s redemption was worth it. The way her feelings and goals changed (time wise) was realistic. How Beck always saw the good in her was so sweet and loved him for it.

They both had a lot to do in order for them to be together. And I am glad they spent time separately to grow and evolve as individuals in order for them to be good together.

Beck & Kate

Story: 3.5 ⭐️
Steam: 4 🔥
Audio: 5 🎧

This one was hard to review. I love a good “villain gets a second chance” book and I knew from the last book that Kate had problems and was struggling but I felt like there was definitely room for her to grow on me and I would be cheering her on.

While I loved Beck and I loved the relationship between him and Kate, I did not like Kate. Her character was so hard to love and just never grew on me. On one hand I sympathize so greatly with her; she’s been through so much and I can’t imagine the pain. But on the other hand, she’s just not a good person. She’s self centered and not kind. And while she did grow a lot in this book it almost seemed against her will a lot of the time. She did so much messed up stuff but seemed to only care because she thought Beck would react badly. I just don’t think she’s a girls girl and that’s sad. I kept wanting to root for her and felt so strongly for her situation but I just didn’t vibe with her.

I wish we could’ve had more of Beck. I think he deserved a little more focus. And I loved him.

Overall, it was very well written and I breezed through it. I love this author and will continue to read her work.
