Summary

A man called Milton walks into town....

On the run from his own demons, John Milton treks through the Michigan wilderness into the town of Truth. He's not looking for trouble, but trouble's looking for him. He finds himself up against a small-town cop who has no idea with whom he is dealing and no idea how dangerous he is.

But Milton is double crossed and badly injured. Unarmed and alone, he flees into the remote Porcupine Mountains with a posse on his tail. His enemies thought they could hunt him down. That was a mistake, and, where Milton is concerned, one mistake is all you get.

From best-selling author Mark Dawson (the John Milton and Beatrix Rose series), The Sword of God is the fifth in the acclaimed series of thrillers that listeners love. Mark Dawson has worked as a lawyer and currently works in the London film industry. His first books, The Art of Falling Apart and Subpoena Colada have been published in multiple languages.

another good listen

Would you listen to The Sword of God again? Why?

I never mind listening to books again because things drop into place the 2nd time round that you missed the significance of at the first listening

Who was your favorite character and why?

well John Milton of course... even though you wouldn't want to cross him...

What does David Thorpe bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

I think he is one of the best narrators for this genre. He sounds like an ex squaddie, and I can visualise all the characters he does. You never get them mixed up.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

John Milton returns

Any additional comments?

I know these books are somewhat formulaic, but I still enjoy them.

Can't get enough of this fantastic series..

The John Milton Series just keeps on delivering! The Sword Of God is the fifth instalment, and a really enjoyable tale with Milton the subject of a hunt in the Michigan wilderness. Having agreed to help a young lady locate her brother, Milton soon stumbles across a much bigger plot, that puts many lives in danger. Badly injured, Milton needs to keep the hunting party off his back, whilst trying to put together the clues as to what his opponent's objectives are.
Superbly narrated by David Thorpe once again.
Highly recommended.

I'm Over John Milton

What will your next listen be?

The Power and patiently awaiting the next Department Q.

You didn’t love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?

I now know how to light a fire in the rain.

Any additional comments?

I started off enjoying this series but by Book 5, John Milton has outstayed his welcome. It feels like the author read an outdoor survival guide and transcribed it word for word into this novel.

If the extraneous narrative was removed, this book would be one quarter of the size.

Farewell John Milton. It was nice knowing you for a while but we’re done.

Good storyline

I found this book enjoyable and well read. It's scary to think that these kinds of fanatical people do exist. Good characters and an interesting storyline. I like Milton and am keen to read more Mark Dawson books, despite some bad reviews I read that nearly put me off listening to any of his books!

Downward Slide?

I quite enjoyed the first few books in the series. A kind of bad Jack Reacher turns good kind of anti hero with an interesting past and uncertain future. If these continue and improve there will be a good series to enjoy. Sadly this latest installment, while good in parts, reads like a pitch to Hollywood for a terrible movie. Unlikely heroics, two dimensional bad guys and silly feats of superhuman endurance, you know the kind of nonsense movies are stuffed with today. Let's hope things improve.

Hmmmm

It passes the time but the writing is a tad cliche ridden and the story has been told before - the hero is a little bit Reacher, a little bit Rambo a little bit... The narrator is quite good, he doesn't sound like I imagine the hero would sound but that's not his fault, the ex special forces guy sounds more like one of the 'Archers' overseeing a scout camp. The early love scene was quite excruciating and should not have been written. It's okay, wouldn't spend a lot of money on it though.

Terrible....dont waste your time

This a very thin and obvious plot about a backwoods loony Christian militia looking to detonate a bomb and a British ex-SAS soldier who takes them down singlehandedly. Highly obvious, thin, boring plot, no tension, weak characterisation and badly read. Absolute rubbish and a complete waste of time.

Reacher with a different name

So much like a Jack Reacher novel I'll be surprised if Lee child doesn't sue!
