Critic reviews

"Ripley, amoral, hedonistic, and charming, is a genuinely original creation." ( Daily Telegraph)
"Precisely plotted, stylishly written, and kept alert by an icy wit. Streets ahead of the conventional thriller: a cool little classic of its kind." ( Evening Standard)

Tense and Unpredictable

Having seen the film a few years ago and remembering nothing much, except that I enjoyed it, I thought I'd refresh my memory with this. It's in turns cringey, clever and tense, and best of all, I didn't guess the ending. In fact, the ending was so surprising that I had to rewind to make sure I hadn't got the wrong end of the stick! I can't remember the end of the film (it's an age thing) but I'm sure it wasn't this. Thomas Ripley is so vividly drawn that I found myself cringeing on his behalf at the start and then listening with mouth hanging open as his character develops. The descriptions of Venice and Rome are so vivid that I felt I'd been there myself. The narration is just right, bringing all the characters to life. The tension builds throughout the second half of the book and by the end I was totally sleep deprived. I couldn't switch it off. Highly recommended.

A real page turner

Very entertaining, the time just flew by.
It was very interesting seeing the world through the eyes of Tom Ripley. I disposed on one level but also quite liked him on another.
It was such a good listen I may now check out the next Ripley book.

Interesting

Enjoyed the story but do have some mixed feelings as I struggled to empathise with Mr Ripley most of the time, but I suppose that's the whole point of the book.
The narration is excellent and really made the story come alive.

Brilliant, much better than the film.

I loved this, it's a horror story of a kind, and the protagonist is unquestionably a monster, almost a textbook sociopath, but Highsmith has spun it in such a way that your sympathies are with him, that's quite a feat. A much more subtle and effective exploration of the mind and motivations than American Psycho, and the book is very nearly 70 years old.

Incomparable plotting; mediocre reading

Highsmith's brilliant story and superb characters, especially antihero Ripley, make for addictive listening despite lacklustre and rather wooden reading.

Good stuff

I struggled with the narrator and his accents but overall a fantastic book. Didn't quite give me the need to check out the others in the series but I enjoyed the story.

Suspenseful well written murder tale.

I like the reader’s voice….. I had seen the film and realised sometime into the book that the film did not follow book. This was my first audible and could not put it down.I don’t know if the film helped or hindered my experience but I did visualise Tom and Marge as portrayed in the film by actor Matt Damon and Gwyneth Paltrow. A good experience to get used to audible books.
