About this listen
In a near-future world where AI and automation have eliminated most jobs, 25-year-old Zara struggles with crushing boredom. Like most of her generation, she receives a universal basic income and has all her basic needs met, but finds no purpose or meaning in her days.
Desperate for stimulation, Zara signs up for the mysterious "Tedium Trials" - a new government program promising to cure boredom. She's placed in a group with other 20-somethings, including the cynical Alex and enthusiastic Mia.
The trials put them through increasingly bizarre and challenging scenarios designed to push the limits of their tolerance for monotony. From mind-numbing data entry tasks to sensory deprivation chambers, Zara and her new friends are forced to confront their own psyches and the nature of boredom itself.
As the trials progress, Zara uncovers a deeper conspiracy behind the program. She realizes the government is using the trials to identify individuals with high boredom thresholds for a secret mission to Mars - a journey that will take decades of mind-numbing space travel.
Zara must decide if the promise of purpose is worth the cost of leaving Earth behind forever. Along the way, she learns that meaning isn't handed to you - it's something you create for yourself, even in the most mundane circumstances.
