Summary
In a sprawling mansion filled with peculiar treasures, January Scaller is a curiosity herself. As the ward of the wealthy Mr. Locke, she feels little different from the artifacts that decorate the halls: carefully maintained, largely ignored and utterly out of place.
But her quiet existence is shattered when she stumbles across a strange book. A book that carries the scent of other worlds and tells a tale of secret doors, of love, adventure and danger. Each page reveals more impossible truths about the world, and January discovers a story increasingly entwined with her own.
Critic reviews
"A gorgeous, aching love letter to stories, storytellers and the doors they lead us through...absolutely enchanting." (Christina Henry, best-selling author of Alice)
"A gorgeously written story of love and longing, of what it means to lose your place in the world and then have the courage to find it again. This book is a door I'm glad to have opened." (Kat Howard, author of An Unkindness of Magicians)
"A tantalising quest through strange and beautiful places and a love story that spans time, worlds and magic. I couldn't put it down." (Peng Shepherd, author of The Book of M)

magical
I have no words for this book. it took me back to the joy I felt as a child reading for the sheer magic of being transported to another place or places in this case. Wonderful.

A good concept but it gets a bit repetitive.
This is one of those books that's a good concept but it doesn't quite come off in the story telling. There are some really lovely and engaging elements, some lovely writing, especially early on when talking about Ade's life, but for me as it goes on it gets a bit repetitive and and was overlong. The story would have benefitted with more judicious editing.
The other problem with this story is the leading character: January was too irritating and unappealing to engage my emotions.
I was much more keen on Ade and I would have loved to have heard more of her adventures after she got stuck behind the closed door.
The other characters are a bit of a mixed bag but at times they are almost caricatures.
I thought the narration was excellent.
Overall 3.5 stars.

Wonderfully magical
In the early 1900s, a young woman embarks on a fantastical journey of self-discovery after finding a mysterious book in this captivating and lyrical debut.
I’m sure this book will be a classic. It transported me to ten thousand other worlds.

Wonderful Story and Narration
Not normally my type of book, but trying to expand my horizons, this book took me a little while to get into. But once there, helped by the superb and comforting narration, I was lost in this magical book where some doors open to new worlds. Well written. A bit like a grown up fairy tale. I’m so glad I purchased this book.

exceptional and unique
Wow! What an incredible story. So beautifully told and narrated . I wasn't sure how I would get on listening to it , but I was totally submerged in this wonderful world of doors and January's tale.
it was a mix of Alice in wonderland style with Gullivers Travels and something totally unique. I did not want it to end. I would love to know what becomes of January and Samuel .
