Summary

Joseph Lewis (1889 - 1968) was one of the most notable atheist activists in the early 20th century. He was the founder of the Truth Publishing Company and for many years the president of a secular humanist association, The Freethinkers of America, over which he was said to exert a rigid control.

The Tyranny of God was one of his earliest books, among which can be found works evaluating other independent thinkers like Jefferson, Lincoln, Voltaire, Paine, and Ingersoll.

In a very brief foreword, the author wrote:

Go forth, little book, to destroy fear,

prejudice and superstition, and help to install

Reason in the minds of the human race

to be its guide in the affairs of life and its living.

The book also contains an encomium by Clarence Darrow and a letter from Thomas Edison.
