About this listen

Jan Fabel is a troubled man. His relationships with the women in his life are becoming increasingly complicated. If that weren’t bad enough, after a gap of 10 years, a female serial killer – the Angel of St Pauli – again makes the headlines when an English pop star is found in Hamburg’s red-light district, dying of savage knife wounds. Links emerge with a series of apparently unrelated events. A journalist murdered in Norway. The death of a Serbian gangster.

And a long-forgotten project by East Germany’s Stasi conceived at the height of the Cold War, involving a highly trained group of female assassins, known by the codename Valkyrie. Fabel’s hunt for the truth will bring him up against the most terrifyingly efficient professional killer.

Excellent in all respects

Would you consider the audio edition of The Valkyrie Song to be better than the print version?

I never understand this daft question, although on this occasion the narration was so good I would definitely say yes

Who was your favorite character and why?

Again daft, Jan Fabel is great so why look further?

Which scene did you most enjoy?

I live in Hamburg and can therefore relate to all of the locations, it's spot on, if a litle creepy hearing a murger taking place a few streets away from where you live

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Absolutely nothing, it is outstanding. His voice is perfectly pitched for a crime thriller of this type and his pronounciation is also spot on.

Any additional comments?

Read it or listen to it soon...

good book not brilliant but detailed a worthy buy

like the book - glad i purchased, not a 5 like say "day of jackal" or "odessa file" but is very interesting. What the book lacked for me was merry go round factor. i.e. it did not rivet me to the text - i guess thats narrative structure - thats my view

Terrific story with great narration

What did you like most about The Valkyrie Song?

Sean Barrett's narration really brings this Jan Fabel story to life. It's a fast paced thriller that kept me gripped from begining to end.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Valkyrie Song?

When one of the Valkyrie had Jan Fabel by the short and curleys

What about Sean Barrett’s performance did you like?

Sean's narration is expertly done. He voices the characters so well that he really adds to the drama of the book.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No - it took about 9 -10 sessions. But that's what I like.

Any additional comments?

This was the 1st Jan Fabel book that I have listen too. I'll start at the begining now.

nesrly a masterpiece

The plot sadly faded away at the end. Too many threads left undone. The Danish Police storyline was not really tied up.

One of the best authors working today

This was the fourth of Craig Russell's books that I'd read in a row and I'm amazed at how he consistently delivers something fresh, fast paced and imaginative. The thing I really that about his characters is that they're believable; Jan Fabel isn't given the all too familiar detectives flaw and you are interested in the whole team he works with because they're all interesting characters in their own right. One word of warning... do not listen to this book before reading 'The Eternal.' This book wasn't available on audio and The Valkyrie Song contains several spoilers that will ruin The Eternal for you unless you read it immediately after The Carnival Master. Worth also mentioning Sean Barrett's narration which is great and well matched to this series of books.

A good well worked thriller

This is a well constructed novel of East German assassins making a complex living in the capitalist Hamburg of modern day. Complex plot with lots of turns and catches.

Possibly too many murders, but hell, who cares as long as its not you who is being murdered.

A very good listen for those who like detective thrillers.
