About this listen

From USA Today bestselling author Kathryn Gauci comes a powerful and unforgettable story of one woman’s incredible will to survive and protect those she loves against insurmountable odds.

Vienna 1938: Austria’s leading couturier, Christina Lehmann, sits at the pinnacle of Viennese society. Her lover, the renowned painter Max Hauser, is at the height of his career. But Max harbors a secret, and it is only a matter of time before the Gestapo finds out. The situation takes a dramatic turn on Kristallnacht, when the pogrom against the Austrian Jews escalates and one of Christina’s Jewish seamstresses is brutally murdered.

In order to protect both Max and her couture house, Christina begins a double life, plunging her into the shadowy world of Nazi oppression, fear, and mistrust fueled by ancient hatreds.

As Vienna descends into chaos, hunger, and disillusionment, will her deception be enough to save Max—or will it end in tragedy?

Based on actual events, this is an epic story of courage and resilience. It is the kind of book that wraps around your soul and leaves an impression.

Wartime Vienna

I have listened to two Kathryn Gauci books thus kart month, a sage really dies write a great book about WW2 and the resistance movement.

The narrator Gabrielle de cuir breathes life into these books.

So, what’s not to like if you like a WW2 saga based on historical facts with great characters.

Loved the characters in the book. Harrowing tale which everyone should know about. How could man be so hateful to others.

insight and understanding

This delightful book brings to life the fears and events of life before the start of WW2, describing how the forces increased the local hatreds,, especially the rise of massive tyranny against the Jews.
Characterisation and the details experienced by those characters are gripping and pull the reader into the story.
I recommend this novel as gripping

Lots of twists and turns

Great listen with lots of twists and turns that really gave an insight into the tightrope many people had to tread during this terrifying period of history. Would definitely recommend.

An easy listen

The story was a bit on the romantic side and the heroine was a bit too good to be true but it was narrated quite well so a pleasant listen

Great narration, excellent story

Well researched, beautifully written, well narrated. And I have to write more because I have to use up 15 words minimum

Nothing original

Rather predictable and unoriginal , gets rather boring by chapter 20, the authoress has whoring , vulgarities and fashions taken from our writers so nothing unique

Stop saying Owstria it’s Austria

The narration is sleepy and I can’t bear to hear Austria mispronounced one more time. Really irritating
