Summary

It was 11:00 pm when I checked my email for the last time and turned off my phone for what I hoped would be forever.

No running water, no car, no electricity or any of the things it powers: the internet, phone, washing machine, radio, or light bulb. Just a wooden cabin, on a smallholding, by the edge of a stand of spruce.

The Way Home is a modern-day Walden - an honest and lyrical account of a remarkable life lived in nature without modern technology. Mark Boyle, author of The Moneyless Man, explores the hard-won joys of building a home with his bare hands, learning to make fire, collecting water from the stream, foraging, and fishing.

What he finds is an elemental life, one governed by the rhythms of the sun and seasons, where life and death dance in a primal landscape of blood, wood, muck, water, and fire - much the same life we have lived for most of our time on earth. Revisiting it brings a deep insight into what it means to be human at a time when the boundaries between man and machine are blurring.

Life changing!

This is the most inspirational life changing book I have ever listened to! I didn’t want it to end and binge listened to it over a weekend.
Beautifully written, this book is gentle and loving as well as offering a wealth of information on the subject of living off grid. I can’t recommend highly enough. Well narrated too!

A wonder of a book, inspiring.

If you are interested in taking a journey into an old way of life, which recognises the need for our reconnection too nature, and that mindfully considers our inpact on the environment without overly romaticising it, this book is for you. I loved Marks poetic, honest and somewhat nostalgic approach to story telling, a great listen.

Beautifully narrated

A book with little science and a lot of soul. For someone that loves science and knowledge this is still somehow better for it

A grower...

I enjoyed the book but it took a while to grow on me. At first I wasn't so keen on the author, he comes across as a bit arrogant. But I'm glad I stuck it out, my opinion of him has now changed. The narration is great, nice and clear.

Mostly a "stream of consciousness"

Not a bad book but one lacking any structure. The author aims for a simple, off grid, life. His musings on the subject are interesting but could do with less numerous quotations from other authors (had I wanted their thoughts, I would have bough their book). I made it to the end and salute the author for his aims, but often, not his methods.

Modern day St. Francis

Inspirational lifestyle choices. If only we all lived a bit more like Mark our planet would be happier, we would be happier and more connected. Read and start the re-wilding.

Awesome

What an immensely powerful book.

I recently listened to Peace is every step by Thich Naht Hanh and was not taken with it.

This book by Mark Boyle gives so much more about the life that he chose to give up tech media and the trappings of a 1st world western society and to be in tune with the world around him.

It is uplifting and has made me rethink some small things in my life I need to change.
His Boffy in Ireland sounds wonderful and would be a welcome retreat for a soul in need.

Thank you for sharing your beautiful story.

Christ what an annoying voice. I stopped listening and deleted after the first few minutes.
