About this listen

Lose yourself in 18th century Cornwall with the compete series boxed set of the West Country Trilogy; a saga of smuggling, superstition, and secrets.

Cornwall, England. 1740.

They say only the brave ride Bridles Lane at night.

Vicar Richard Dodge speaks of ghosts and demons, conducting elaborate exorcisms in his churchyard overlooking the lane. And with the villagers sheltering in fear, local smugglers carry their haul up the road to be hidden in the safety of the church.

Isaac and Scarlett Bailey have spent their lives hiding contraband in Talland church. Forced into free trade by their father's mistakes, they want nothing more than to escape the smuggling syndicate and build a life above the law.

On the other side of Bridles Lane, Flora Kelly has grown up in the shadow of her mother, the village charmer. Sceptical of her mother's craft, Flora reopens her family's tavern, determined that her life will not be one of fortune telling and herbal lore.

When a seemingly abandoned ship is wrecked in Talland Bay, it sparks a wave of hysteria among the superstitious villagers. Faith in the vicar wavers and Flora feels herself drawn to the controversial old ways of her mother. Among growing unrest, the mystery of the wrecked ship deepens, unearthing long-forgotten secrets that will tear a village - and a family - apart.

Spoilt by narrator

What might be a good story sadly spoilt by awful narration. Not sure I can see past this and continue :(

Angry Narration Spoils Story

These books are a good story of smuggling and strife. But oh how it is all ruined by the narrator. Her voice sounds harsh and angry throughout. It stops you from listening to the story. All you can hear is the pitch of her voice. Id recommend you read these rather than listen.

Oh my ears

I believe the story is good but I just can’t listen to the narrator. Maybe it’s me but I find the monotone bland unemotional vocals horrific to listen to. So these books are now on my DO NOT LISTEN TO list. It’s a real shame as I think the story would be great but I just can’t listen any longer.

Very Disappointed

I am sure that this story is very good but I just cannot stand listening to the narrator. Her voice never varies, hard to describe, like a sing song. Had to delete it.

Awful Narration

I couldn’t continue listening to this trilogy as the narrator drove me mad. It’s like listening to a robot reading the story, just awful, totally ruined the story.

Terrible narrator

The topic of the book really appealed to me, but the narrator was so bad I couldn't listen to her. I will look out for the books in the charity shop to give the author another chance.

Great Book

Enthralling story but I struggled with the Narrator's voice which felt like she was shouting and giving over emphasis all the time which detracted from the story. Also her mispronunciation of 'gunwhale' was very annoying.
