Summary

In the wild, windswept Welsh Marches, a noble young lord rides homewards, embittered, angry and in danger.

He is Guyon, Lord of Ledworth, heir to threatened lands, husband-to-be of Judith of Ravenstow. Their union will save his lands - but they have yet to meet...for this is Wales at the turn of the 12th century. Dynasties forge and fight, and behind the precarious throne of William Rufus, political intrigue is raging.

Caught amidst the violence are Judith and Guyon, bound together yet poles apart. But when a dark secret from the past is revealed and the full horror of war crashes over Guyon and Judith, they are forced to face insurmountable odds. Together...

Lovely story

Love love love Elizabeth Chadwick's work. This was the first book I read of Elizabeth's some years ago and I was hooked and have since read every book of hers, I was thrilled to see this had recently come out on Audible and I wasn't disappointed, I wasn't sure about the narrator at first but she grew on me as the story unfolded. This is a gentle love story entwined with late 11th /early 12th century history. Her historical research is thorough and second to none in all her novels and has definitely whetted my appetite to look into and learn so much more of this era. Very pleased to see more of Elizabeth's earlier works coming out on audible. A lovely story.

I should have loved this book but ...

I usually love anything by Elizabeth Chadwick - indeed her "The Greatest Knight" "The Scarlet Lion" rate in my top 5 books of all time.

For some reason I struggled with this but kept it for a while restarting over & over again. The premise is good with medieval protagonists who come to care for one another after a lot of mis steps & take on other villains of the piece. The narration is good too but I found I could not care about what happened about them. My fault I know but I did try hard so hard to get into the book. I comfort myself that this was Elizabeth's first book & she has corrected the missing ingredient in future writing.

So I am not telling anyone not to try it but it is just not for me - sorry.

An enjoyable non taxing easy listen

Sometimes you just want to listen and not have to overly concentrate on the various characters and plot twists to follow the narrative; this book fitted what I needed.
The narration was clear and varied in pitch and tone making it simple to differentiate between the characters - a job well done.
The story itself was predictable in its conclusion, indeed it rambled along with little notion to plot twists but this does not detract from the overall enjoyment.

Fantastic

Beautiful, engaging with a true sense of historical accuracy. A great pace throughout and the narrator is perfect. Well done Elizabeth.

Better than the first in the trilogy

The first book seemed rushed and left me slightly disappointed. This book is different, It has more content/story line, and the characters seem more well defined in this book. Can’t wait for the third one now

More Mills & Boon than medieval fantasy

This had a very Mills & Boon vibe that I wasn't expecting. I wanted a gripping historal fiction / medieval fantasy. But instead it's more a novel leaning towards female readers. It was a struggle to finish the audio book. I didn't care about Guy and Judith's relationship, I wanted more back stabbing and political skull diggery.

The wild hunt

Enjoyed but Judith a bit annoying. Could have been the way it was narrated. There was no authors notes which are quite interesting normally
