Summary

With all her signature warmth, wonderful characters and unforgettable drama, start this brand new chapter in the storytelling of Rosie Goodwin, Britain's best-loved saga author.

1850. When Opal Sharp finds herself and her younger siblings suddenly orphaned and destitute, she thinks things can get no worse.

But soon three of them - including Opal - are struck down with the illness that took their father from them, and her brother Charlie is forced to make an impossible decision. Unable to afford a doctor, he knows the younger children will not survive. So, unbeknownst to Opal, Charlie takes their younger siblings to the workhouse, where he knows they will at least be fed and have a roof over their heads.

Opal is heartbroken and struggles to forgive him. Charlie, in turn, takes bigger and bigger risks to try to support what's left of the Sharp family and earn Opal's forgiveness - but he takes it too far and finds himself in trouble with the law. Soon, he is sent on a convict ship to Australia.

As poor Opal is forced to say goodbye to the final member of her family, she makes a promise to reunite them all one day.

Will Opal ever see her family again?

Enjoyable story with some annoying aspects.

Overall, I did enjoy this story. Historical romance/family sagas are my favourite genre. However, unfortunately I found several aspects of both the writing and the narration rather annoying.
Firstly, I felt that the narrator's voice sounded rather childish at times, especially when she was narrating the dialogue of certain characters, which made them sound frankly ridiculous.
Also, she didn't seem to understand the difference between the words 'wandered/wandering' and wondered/wondering.' This occurred several times throughout the story, which I found quite annoying.
The other aspect that I found particularly grating is the author's repetitive use of certain expressions.

Narration annoying

Nice story but felt narration let it down Felt Charlie Sanderson reads as if she is reading a story to children. Emphasising words such as And ,So,Then ,pausing after each word This would not put me off reading other books read by Charlie but it can be frustrating.

A Delightful Story

This was another lovely story written by Rosie Goodwin and read beautifully by Charlie Sanderson. It was very sad in places but the ending, when all the children were reunited and Opal married Matthew, was lovely. I really enjoyed it!

Good light reading

I like to read a book at night that isn’t scary and this was just the thing, it is also a good story.

Heartwarming story.

Great story that brings to life the struggles. The people went through simply to survive. Narrator has an irritating way of over emphasising the end of words, particularly those ending in S. Other than that, really good.

The Winter Promise

Another brilliant story of a young families seperate struggle through life after their parents died. Each one of the children went in different directions after they were cruelly separated.
This had you wondering how on earth we're they to find each other again. lots of unexpected twists.
Another super tale by Rosie Goodwin
