Summary

For everyone who wants to understand more about coffee and its wonderful nuances and possibilities, this is the book to have.

Coffee has never been better, or more interesting, than it is today. Coffee producers have access to more varieties and techniques than ever before and we, as consumers, can share in that expertise to make sure the coffee we drink is the best we can find. Where coffee comes from, how it was harvested, the roasting process and the water used to make the brew are just a few of the factors that influence the taste of what we drink. Champion barista and coffee expert James Hoffmann examines these key factors, looking at varieties of coffee, the influence of terroir, how it is harvested and processed, the roasting methods used, through to the way in which the beans are brewed.

Country by country - from Bolivia to Zambia - he then identifies key characteristics and the methods that determine the quality of that country's output. Along the way we learn about everything from the development of the espresso machine, to why strength guides on supermarket coffee are really not good news. This is the first book to chart the coffee production of over 35 countries, encompassing knowledge never previously published outside the coffee industry.

Fantastically comprehensive

Covers 99% of everything someone getting into coffee would want to know. Nice little anecdotes to expand on great coffee world facts.
James' voice is so so husky, sometimes a little difficult to hear in loud traffic when I'm commuting. Not his fault though, probably all that coffee he's drunk.

Fantastic book.

This was a very informative and easy to follow book, learned so many things even though I work in the industry. I liked the fact that the author narrated it, I'll recommend it to anyone who wants to learn about coffee!

James Hoffman is the "Weird Coffee Person"

The author gives a tour of the world of coffee from all aspects including interesting details about history, and geography.

While all is explained clearly the level of detail is incredibly comprehensive. Ideal for those looking to get a foundation interest in the world of specialty coffee.

A must read for coffee nerds

This was such a pleasure to listen to. To no surprise Hoffman's voice is still as soothing as you'd expect it to be and I honestly couldn't pick a better person to read his own book. The tittle of the book ''The World Atlas of Coffee'' speaks for itself, it truly is an atlas and if you have some interest in finding more about coffee, its history, brew methods, origins etc... then I highly suggest you pick this one up. If not for the coffee maybe just do it for the superb narration, you won't be disappointed. There’s not much else to say than that I thoroughly enjoyed exploring the world of coffee :)

excellent

Very informative, well written and James reading is fantastic. The book is great, but the audio book is even better.

A great book, enthusiasticly read

This book is a nice compliment to the knowledge that you will find on James' youtube channel and touches on things that have been mentioned less so (eg brewing water and varieties of coffee).
I think this is definitely worth a credit and is much better writen and read than other coffee books.

I would have left out the section on different brewing methods as it is a bit monotonous and I can't imagine anyone trying to use the audiobook specicly to follow one through.

Also I'm going to use this opportunity to say that I am also an English James and I would love to see a segment about Wittard coffee in a Q&A sometime.

James ate his face

Listening to the audio book was great between watching two James Hoffmann videos. I was surprised that he was the one who read the book but it was a great experience.
