The History Hour
About this listen
Why should anyone who is not interested in aviation or history be interested in the Wright brothers? What do their life and struggle have to add to the lives of the common person out there? Do world changers possibly have more in common with us than many of us realize? As you will listen to in this book, the Wright brothers encountered many challenges within their lives. The buzzwords of the business world today all encompass what the Wright brothers possessed in great abundance.
Inside, you’ll hear about:
- Dreaming of the (propeller) blade
- Developing the blade
- Perfecting the blade
- Protecting the blade
- And much more!
The dream of flight was a lifelong pursuit for the Wright brothers. Their first experience with the pursuit of flight involved a child’s toy. They loved that toy and eventually broke it. How many hours did the brothers put into fixing that toy before achieving their goal of allowing it to fly again?

Excellent
Wilbur and Orville Wright have gone down in history as pioneers of flight and the inventors of the first airplane. This is the story of how their mechanical interest in printing presses and bicycles led them towards finding solutions to the conundrum of flight. Find out how their methodological research and innovative ideas set them apart from other inventors, and learn about the newspaper editors and scientists’ reactions to the Wright brothers’ achievement - the slow transformation of skepticism and disbelief to amazement.

. The book ends rather abruptly, as I guess it should, when the description of their flying careers are overtaken by the court fights and setting up their manufacturing business, with little time for either flying themselves or further experimentation. Over time, other early aviators surpassed their Wright Flyers, but in truth all of them stemmed from the thousands of hours of dedicated hard work, learned knowledge, and fundamental inventions of the Wright Brothers. One of the most satisfying and edifying reads I've had in a long time.

It really brought home to me the saying that "An Aircraft is a series of compromises flying in close formation". Fascinating also is the ground covered by the author in the relationships of the brothers and their sister. McCullough shines a light on the brother's activities around Dayton, Ohio. McCullough definitely appears to be on a mission to re-introduce these early pioneers whose invention literally flew away from them in the next 100 years.

One of the larger themes of the book is the nature
One of the larger themes of the book is the nature and intimacy of the Wright family, particularly Orville, Wilbur and their sister Katherine, as well as their father. Integral to the book is the vast collection of family letters McCullough draws from. The details surrounding the Wrights’ journey are made even richer by hearing them speak and reflect on them in their own words through personal correspondence, which the author has diligently parsed for that very purpose.

Two brothers from Ohio achieved what many at the time thought was unachievable. Through their unwavering determination the Wright brothers invented the first airplane with money earned from their bicycle shop—they received no funding or financial assistance of any kind.

The History Hour writes — “He was an unyielding abstainer, which was rare on the frontier, a man of rectitude and purpose— all of which could have served as a description of Milton himself and Wilbur and Orville as well.”
His strict values molded and focused the views of the three younger Wrights (Katherine, Wilbur, and Orville). In addition to his strictness, he was a true classical liberal in his beliefs in the scientific method and equal rights for all people, no matter their race or gender. For example, Milton wrote to his sons when they were in Paris trying to get support for their flying machine: “Sons—Be men of the highest types personally, mentally, morally, and spiritually. Be clean, temperate, sober minded, and great souled.” As grown, experienced, and highly successful inventors, they responded: “Father — All the wine I have tasted since leaving home would not fill a single wine glass. I am sure that Orville and myself will do nothing that will disgrace the training we received from you and Mother.”

What an excellent book on the Wright brothers and
What an excellent book on the Wright brothers and their adventures in developing the airplane. These brothers started as bicycle repairmen to creators of a "flying machine". The reader will discover their interesting adventures to Europe trying to sell their machine to the French as well as other European nations. Their challenges in getting their "flying machine" to stay aloft is exciting. One will have a different picture of what the Wright brothers went through in designing this first airplane. This book ranks as one of the best books about these USA heroes.

Through all of this, the Wright brothers remained
Through all of this, the Wright brothers remained as they were before the world paid the most intense attention to them. They were men of few words; they were modest but knew exactly what they had accomplished; they ferociously protected their invention from imitation; they asked noone to take risks with their machines that they did not take; they were not corrupted by praise or attention. They were quintessential Americans at the turn of the last century: they worked hard to achieve their success and did something that changed so much about the world around them.
